Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Contract

Grant Whitmore’s hands trembled so violently that he dropped the weathered brown envelope onto the leather surface of his desk. Documents slid out—faded hospital records, an old newspaper clipping with the headline “Tragic Accident Claims Life of Young Artist,” and a single, pristine polaroid photograph.
Elena leaned forward, her breath catching in her throat. The photograph showed a young woman in her early twenties, standing in a field of wild sunflowers. She had the exact same jawline, the same deep-set hazel eyes, and the same silver-threaded brown hair as Elena. But it was her left hand, lifted to shield her eyes from the sun, that drew Elena’s gaze.
Clearly visible on the girl's palm was a tiny, five-pointed star-shaped birthmark.
"Her name was Lily Brooks," Grant whispered, his voice cracking with an agonizing grief buried for nearly thirty years. "She was my first love. My only true love. We met in college, before my father forced me into an arranged marriage with Catherine to save the family business. When I broke things off to obey my family, Lily vanished. She told me she was leaving Pennsylvania forever. I never knew... I never knew she was pregnant."
Elena felt the room spin. The grand mansion she had scrubbed, polished, and served for nine years suddenly felt like a cage of secrets. "My mother never spoke of you," Elena said, her voice shaking but resolute. "She raised me alone in Mill Creek until I was six. Then... then she died in a hit-and-run. I grew up in St. Agnes Orphanage. I thought I had no one."
"You had me," Grant roared softly, tears finally escaping his eyes. "If I had known, I would have searched the entire earth for you! You are my daughter, Elena. My flesh and blood. The rightful heir to everything I have built."
The weight of his words crashed down on Elena. Nine years of being treated as a second-class citizen, nine years of watching Mason, Claire, and Noah enjoy a life of absolute luxury while she lived in a cramped room above the garage. All the while, she was the eldest child.
Before Grant could speak further, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed against the heavy oak door of the study.
"Grant? Why is this door locked?" Catherine Whitmore’s voice pierced through the wood, cold and demanding. "The estate manager said the Brooks girl hasn't left yet. Her bus is in twenty minutes. Why is she in your study?"
Grant looked at Elena, a sudden fire igniting in his eyes. He stood up, walking toward the door. "Elena, stay right there. It is time the truth comes to light."
He unlocked the door and swung it open. Catherine stepped into the room, her elegant designer coat perfectly tailored, her diamonds catching the study’s warm light. Her eyes immediately landed on Elena sitting in the leather chair, and her expression contorted into utter disgust.
"What is the meaning of this?" Catherine hissed. "Grant, why are you entertaining a disgruntled servant? She resigned. Let her leave."
"She isn't leaving, Catherine," Grant said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "Because this house belongs to her just as much as it belongs to me. Elena is Lily’s daughter. She is my biological child."
Catherine froze. The color drained from her perfectly made-up face, turning her skin an ashen gray. For a split second, pure terror flashed in her eyes—before she quickly masked it with a high-pitched, mocking laugh.
"Are you insane?" Catherine sneered, stepping closer to the desk. "You're letting a desperate thief manipulate you with a sob story? She probably found out about your old college girlfriend and fabricated this whole thing to extort us! I knew she was a snake from the moment she walked into this house!"

"She didn't tell me, Catherine. I saw the mark," Grant said, pointing to the documents on the desk. "And I don't need your belief. Tomorrow morning, Elena and I are taking a DNA test. And if it matches—which I know it will—I am rewriting my will. She will receive her full, rightful share of the Whitmore empire."
Catherine clutched her pearl necklace, her eyes darting between Grant and Elena with venomous hatred. She realized, with absolute certainty, that her family's absolute control over the millions was now under catastrophic threat.
