chapter 1: “Don’t marry her!”

“Don’t marry her!”
A nine-year-old girl in a dirty hoodie ran onto the church steps, forcing guests to jump aside. Phones flew into the air to record. The music died instantly.

At the top of the stairs, millionaire groom Lucas Moreno stopped mid-step and turned slowly.
A guard rushed down and grabbed the girl’s arm. “Step back!”
But she broke free just enough to seize Lucas’s expensive jacket with one small dirty hand.
“If you go in…” she said, staring directly into his eyes, “…you won’t come out the same.”
The crowd erupted in whispers.

Lucas looked down at her, expecting fear. There was none. No begging. No panic. Only certainty.
“What do you know?” he asked coldly.
The girl pointed straight through the church doors.
“Her.”

Then she pointed at the suited lawyer standing near the entrance.
“And the lawyer.”
The man stiffened instantly. Guests noticed. Murmurs grew louder.
Lucas pulled a thick stack of cash from his pocket and held it toward her.
“Take this. Leave.”
She never even glanced at the money.
“I want you alive.”
Silence slammed across the stairs.

Then the church doors opened slowly.
Bride Valeria appeared in a flawless white dress. Beautiful. Perfect. Untouchable.
Her eyes locked onto the little girl.
There was no confusion on her face. No surprise.
Only recognition.
The girl smiled slowly.
“She knows me.”
Lucas turned sharply toward his bride just as all color drained from her face.

The silence lasted only a heartbeat.

Then chaos exploded.

Guests turned toward Valeria. Phones rose higher. The lawyer near the entrance suddenly looked as if he wanted to disappear into the stone walls of the church.

Lucas Moreno didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on his bride.

"Valeria," he said quietly. "Do you know this girl?"

For a fraction of a second, Valeria said nothing.

That tiny hesitation was enough.

The billionaire entrepreneur who had built an empire by reading people noticed it instantly.

The girl was right.

Valeria knew her.

"No," Valeria finally answered.

Too quickly.

Too smoothly.

And far too late.

The little girl laughed.

It wasn't the laugh of a child.

It sounded older somehow.

Sadder.

"You always lie first," she said.

The lawyer stepped forward.

"Lucas, this is ridiculous. She's obviously disturbed. Let security handle this."

The man reached for the girl's shoulder.

She flinched violently.

Not with fear.

With hatred.

Pure hatred.

The reaction was so strong that several guests gasped.

The girl pointed directly at him.

"Don't let him touch me."

Lucas noticed something.

The lawyer's hand stopped halfway.

Not because of the crowd.

Because he looked scared.

The millionaire's instincts sharpened.

Years of negotiations had taught him one thing:

People fear what they can't control.

And right now, the lawyer looked terrified.

"What is your name?" Lucas asked the girl.

The lawyer interrupted immediately.

"It doesn't matter."

Lucas slowly turned toward him.

"I wasn't asking you."

The church steps fell silent again.

The girl swallowed.

"Mia."

"Last name?"

She hesitated.

Then looked directly at Valeria.

"Reyes."

The color vanished completely from Valeria's face.

Someone in the crowd whispered.

"Isn't that Valeria's maiden name?"

The whisper spread like wildfire.

Lucas felt something cold settle into his stomach.

Valeria Reyes.

Mia Reyes.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

But his instincts screamed otherwise.

"Who are you?" Lucas asked.

The girl's eyes filled with emotion for the first time.

Not fear.

Pain.

"My mother was Sofia Reyes."

Valeria stumbled backward.

Actually stumbled.

The crowd erupted.

Lucas had never seen his fiancée lose composure before.

Not once.

Not during business crises.

Not during media scandals.

Not during the hostile takeover attempt that nearly destroyed one of his companies.

Yet one little girl's name had nearly knocked her off her feet.

"Mia..." Valeria whispered.

The girl nodded.

"You remember now."

The lawyer's face had become ghost-white.

Lucas noticed sweat gathering on the man's forehead despite the cool morning air.

"What is happening?" Lucas demanded.

Nobody answered.

The church bells began ringing.

The sound felt ominous.

Wrong.

Like a warning.

Mia looked at Lucas.

"You shouldn't marry her."

"Why?"

"Because after today, you'll belong to them."

"Them?"

She pointed at Valeria.

Then the lawyer.

Then the church.

Lucas frowned.

The church?
