Chapter 4 - THE RECKONING AT THE GATES

Ethan was shivering violently, his skin pale and clammy, his lips tinged with a terrifying shade of blue. He collapsed into Emma’s arms, his small hands clutching her uniform with incredible desperation.
"I knew... I knew you'd come for me, Emma..." Ethan wept, his voice raspy and broken.
"I've got you, baby," Emma sobbed, wrapping her arms around him, pulling him close to her chest. "I've got you. You're safe now."
Suddenly, a loud gunshot shattered the hallway!
BANG!
A bullet slammed into the brick wall three inches above Emma’s head, showering her with red dust and concrete chips!
Emma spun around, shielding Ethan with her body.
Standing at the end of the service corridor was Isabella Sterling.
Her ivory satin gown was stained with wine and dirt, her elegant hair wild and disheveled, her violet eyes burning with insane, murderous fury. In her hand, she held a small pearl-handled revolver.
"You miserable, worthless servant!" Isabella screamed, raising the gun, her hand shaking violently. "You ruined my life! You ruined EVERYTHING!"
William Sterling ran into the corridor behind her, his face pale with utter shock as he saw his nine-year-old son lying in Emma’s arms, half-conscious and covered in bruises.
"ISABELLA, STOP!" William roared, lunging forward to grab her arm. "MY GOD, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"
Isabella spun around, striking William across the face with the heavy barrel of the revolver!
William fell back against the wall, blood pouring from a cut above his eye, gasping in shock as he looked at the monster he had married.
"Get out of my way, William!" Isabella shrieked, turning the gun back toward Emma and Ethan. "I'm not going back to poverty! I'm not going to prison! I worked too hard for this money!"
She pulled the trigger!
CLICK.
The chamber was empty.
Isabella pulled the trigger again frantically—CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!—her face contorting in wild, panicked disbelief as the hammer fell on empty firing pins.
Before she could rack the cylinder, the heavy stained-glass doors of the main entrance burst inward with a deafening crash!
"NEW YORK POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"
Dozens of armed tactical officers from the NYPD Special Response Unit, clad in heavy black body armor with assault rifles raised, poured into the West Wing corridor, their weapon lights piercing the gloom!
Detective Miller stepped through the front line, his service weapon aimed directly at Isabella’s chest.
"Isabella Vance!" Miller commanded, his voice thunderous. "Drop the gun and put your hands behind your head! Drop it!"
Isabella looked at the tactical officers, then down at her empty revolver, then at Emma, who was holding Ethan tightly in her arms, supported by a frantic, weeping William Sterling who had rushed to his son's side.
The pearl-handled revolver slipped from Isabella’s numb fingers, clattering onto the marble floor.
Two female tactical officers rushed forward, slamming Isabella against the brick wall, pulling her arms behind her back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists with a series of sharp, decisive clicks.
"Isabella Vance," an officer read her rights coldly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, poisoning, forgery, and the murder of Eleanor Sterling."
Isabella didn't say a word. As she was dragged down the corridor past her husband, she looked at William with pure, unadulterated venom.
William didn't even look at her. He was on his knees beside Emma, tears streaming down his face as he cupped his son’s pale cheek.
"Ethan... oh God, Ethan, I'm so sorry..." William sobbed, his voice breaking into pieces. "Forgive me, son... please forgive me..."
Ethan looked up at his father, then reached out his small hand and grabbed Emma’s thumb, squeezing it gently.
"Emma saved me, Dad," Ethan whispered softly. "She kept her promise to Mom."
Emergency medical technicians flooded the hallway with a stretcher, gently lifting Ethan onto the padded mattress, attaching an oxygen mask to his face, and rushing him out toward the waiting ambulances outside.
Detective Miller walked up to Emma, who was still kneeling on the floor, covered in brick dust and sweat, holding her bright yellow cleaning gloves in her hand.
Miller offered her a warm, respectful hand, pulling her up to her feet.
"You did good, Emma," Miller said softly. "The evidence you sent was rock solid. The District Attorney is filing capital murder charges tonight."

Emma looked out through the open entrance doors toward the street, where red and blue emergency lights flashed against the Manhattan night sky, illuminating the crowd of wealthy party guests who were watching in utter shock as Isabella and Frank Vance were loaded into separate police vans in steel handcuffs.
The nightmare was finally over.
