Chapter 3 - THE CHASE IN THE SHADOWS

The dumbwaiter carriage rattled softly as Emma let herself drop the final ten feet down the dark shaft, landing with a muted thud on the stone floor of the sub-basement kitchen.

Dust filled her throat, but she forced herself not to cough.

She scrambled out of the small wooden box, landing on her hands and knees on the cold concrete. The sub-basement was pitch black, lit only by the faint green glow of emergency exit signs and the rhythmic hum of the mansion’s industrial HVAC generators.

She pulled out her phone. The battery was at twelve percent.

She immediately opened her messaging app and sent all the photographs—the succinylcholine vials, the false passports, and the pages of Isabella’s journal—directly to Detective Miller.

Below the images, she typed three words: THEY ARE LEAVING.

A red error icon flashed across the screen: SIGNAL LOST — SUB-BASEMENT NETWORK BLOCKED.

"No, no, no!" Emma whispered frantically, holding the phone high above her head as she backed away into the dark corridor. The thick reinforced concrete walls and iron beams of the sub-basement were completely blocking her cellular signal.

She needed to reach the main floor service corridor to send the files and open the hidden hatch before Frank Vance caught up to her.

Suddenly, the heavy metal door at the top of the sub-basement stairs slammed open.

Beam of bright, high-intensity tactical light cut through the gloom, sweeping across the concrete floor.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps began descending the iron stairs.

"I know you can hear me, Emma," Frank’s voice echoed down the concrete stairwell, cold, calm, and detached. "You're a smart girl. You worked hard to support your little sister’s college tuition, didn't you? It would be a terrible shame if something unfortunate happened to her, too."

Emma squeezed herself behind an industrial commercial washer, her breathing shallow and quiet. She reached for her belt, her hand closing around her heavy brass cleaning spray bottle and a can of industrial aerosol degreaser.

"Isabella and I have been building this operation for seven years, Emma," Frank continued, his footsteps reaching the bottom of the stairs. The beam of his flashlight flickered across the laundry machines, missing her by inches. "Do you really think a domestic servant is going to ruin a forty-billion-dollar acquisition? William Sterling is weak. His first wife was weak. And his son is weak. They don't deserve that fortune. We do."

The flashlight beam settled directly on the commercial washer Emma was hiding behind.

Frank smiled, pulling his suppressed handgun from his coat, stepping forward with methodical slowness.

"Come out, Emma. Make it quick."

Emma didn't wait.

She popped out from behind the washer, aiming the aerosol degreaser directly into Frank’s face, and pressed the nozzle!

A heavy cloud of caustic chemical spray blasted directly into Frank’s eyes!

"AGH! MY EYES!" Frank screamed, dropping his flashlight as he clawed frantically at his burning, blinded eyes!

Emma didn't hesitate. She swung the heavy brass spray bottle with all her strength, striking Frank across the side of his temple with a loud CRACK!

Frank stumbled backward, crashing into a rack of metal laundry carts, his gun clattering across the concrete floor.

Emma snatched the suppressed pistol from the floor, turned, and sprinted toward the sub-basement freight elevator!

She hit the call button frantically.

DING.

The heavy steel elevator doors slid open. Emma jumped inside, hit the button for the West Wing ground floor, and collapsed against the back wall, gasping for air.

As the elevator rose, she looked at her phone.

The signal indicator flickered from zero bars to two bars as the elevator reached the ground floor level.

The message status changed from PENDING to DELIVERED.

A second later, her phone buzzed in her hand.

It was a text from Detective Miller: EVIDENCE RECEIVED. JUDGE SIGNED EMERGENCY WARRANT. THREE TACTICAL UNITS ENTERING ESTATE PROPERTY NOW. HOLD YOUR POSITION.

The elevator doors slid open onto the quiet West Wing service corridor.

The house above was in utter chaos. The sounds of screams, panicked shouts, and footsteps echoed from the main ballroom as William Sterling—finally realizing the horrifying reality of what his new wife had done—was shouting for his son.

Emma sprinted down the narrow corridor, her eyes locked on the massive baroque painting hanging against the brick wall.

She grabbed the golden frame, yanked it aside with all her remaining strength, and let it smash onto the floor!

The steel access hatch was exposed.

"Ethan!" Emma yelled, pounding her fist against the steel door. "Ethan, I'm here! I'm opening the door!"

"Emma..." a faint, barely audible whisper came from inside. "It's... so dark..."

Emma looked at the electronic keypad.

She remembered the journal entries she had photographed. The date of Eleanor’s death—August 22nd—the day Isabella’s monstrous plan had claimed its first victim.

Emma typed six digits into the keypad: 0 - 8 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 8.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.

The tiny LED light on the lock turned from flashing red to solid, glowing green!

The heavy internal mechanical bolt slid back with a loud CLACK.

Emma grabbed the steel handle, yanked the heavy hatch open, and pulled the small, fragile body of Ethan Sterling out into the corridor!
