Chapter 2 - The Severing of Blood

The two junior security guards stepped in immediately, placing their bodies between Mark and Sarah.
"Sir, step back," the taller guard ordered, his hand resting on his baton. "Do not approach the victim."
"She’s my wife!" Mark yelled, tears finally spilling over his flushed cheeks. "I didn't mean... I thought she was trying to hurt Leo! Jessica told me—"
"I don't care what your sister told you, sir," the Security Director said, his voice entirely devoid of sympathy. He signaled to the nurse who had dropped her clipboards earlier. "Get a gurney down here from labor and delivery immediately. We need a full fetal monitor on this patient. She took a hard fall on her side."
Within seconds, the lobby erupted into controlled chaos. Two nurses rushed over with a mobile gurney, gently lifting Sarah off the cold linoleum. Sarah kept her eyes squeezed shut, weeping softly, her hands never leaving the tight curve of her belly. As they wheeled her toward the maternity elevators, Leo pushed his own wheelchair forward, his tiny hand reaching out to touch the edge of Sarah’s blanket.
"I'm sorry, Sarah," the little boy sobbed, his lower lip trembling. "I tried to tell him."
"It's okay, sweetie," Sarah whispered through her tears, her voice cracking. "You did the right thing. Daddy's just... Daddy's gone."
Mark tried to follow the gurney, but the guards blocked his path. He stood in the center of the lobby, completely isolated, a man who had destroyed his entire life based on a whisper of malice.
He turned slowly to face Jessica.
The smug, aristocratic composure she had worn like armor all morning was entirely gone. She was trapped against the directory board, surrounded by three hospital guards, her blue-stained hands shaking violently.
"Why?" Mark asked, the word coming out as a hollow, broken growl. He stepped toward her, the muscles in his jaw twitching with a terrifying intensity. "Why would you do this to Leo? Why would you do this to Sarah?"
"Because she doesn't belong in this family!" Jessica spat, her panic twisting into a venomous defense. "Ever since Mom died and left the estate trust to you and Leo, she's been trying to control you! If you have another baby with her, my share of the inheritance is completely wiped out! You were supposed to marry someone from our circle, Mark! Not some middle-class nobody who thinks she can play mother to my nephew!"
Mark stared at his sister, looking at her as if she were a venomous creature he had never seen before. The realization that his own sister had weaponized his son's cancer to secure a corporate payout made his stomach violently turn.
"You're a monster," Mark whispered. "You aren't my sister. You're nothing to me."
"Jessica Miller," the Security Director said, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for the theft and destruction of a controlled medical substance, reckless endangerment of a minor, and filing a fraudulent police report. Hands behind your back."

As the steel cuffs clicked tightly around Jessica’s wrists, she began to scream, her designer coat wrinkling as the guards marched her out the automatic sliding doors into the pouring rain where a police cruiser was already waiting.
But Mark didn't watch her go. He turned back toward the elevators, his heart hammering against his ribs as he realized the true horror of his actions was just beginning.
