Chapter 1 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

The Security Director’s words hung in the air like heavy smoke.
Slowly, under the collective gaze of the entire lobby, Jessica took her hands out of her beige trench coat pockets. Her perfectly manicured fingers were stained a deep, vivid, fluorescent blue along the palms and under the fingernails. The exact same blue residue was smeared along the rim of her coat pockets, glowing faintly under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"That... that's from my lipstick," Jessica stammered, her voice thin and desperate. She tried to rub her hands against the fabric of her coat, but the blue dye only smeared further, a glaring brand of her guilt. "I had a spill in my purse earlier. Mark, you know I’m clumsy! Tell them!"
Mark didn't say a word. He stood up from his knees, his eyes wide, his gaze traveling from his sister’s stained hands to the dark blue canvas medicine bag clutched in his own fist. He looked at the bottom edge of the bag. It wasn't just damp; it bore the faint, transferred smear of that same blue security dye from the cafeteria’s hazardous waste bin.
The pieces of the puzzle slammed together in Mark’s mind with the force of a physical blow.
"You told me you saw her walk out with it," Mark whispered, his voice dangerously low, the rage that had just been directed at Sarah suddenly pivoting toward his sister. "You told me you followed her down here."
"I did! Mark, she’s setting me up!" Jessica cried, backing away until her spine hit the glass directory board. "Leo is confused! He’s just a child, he doesn't know what he's seeing!"
"Our high-definition security feeds from the fourth floor don't get confused, Ms. Miller," the Security Director interrupted, pulling a ruggedized tablet from his belt. He turned the screen toward Mark. "Ten minutes before your wife went down to the cafeteria, the camera outside Room 412 clearly shows you, sir, stepping into the doctor's consult room. Exactly thirty seconds later, your sister enters the room, walks out with the blue canvas bag tucked under her designer coat, and takes the service elevator straight down to the basement disposal zone."
The video played in crystal-clear definition. There was no denying it. There was no spinning it. Jessica had systematically stolen her own dying nephew’s medication, thrown it into a toxic waste bin, and then used the crisis to frame her pregnant sister-in-law.
Mark stared at the screen, the breath leaving his lungs in a ragged gasp. The blind, protective fury that had consumed him for the past hour dissolved into a sickening, paralyzing realization of what he had just done.
He slowly turned his head to look at the floor.
Sarah was still curled on her side, her face pale, her lips trembling as she clutched her seven-month pregnant belly. A thin trickle of dark blood had dried at the corner of her mouth where his hand had struck her. She wasn't looking at him with anger. She was looking at him with a profound, shattering fear.

"Sarah..." Mark choked out, dropping the medicine bag as his knees buckled. He reached toward her, his hands trembling. "Oh my God, Sarah... I'm so sorry..."
"Don't touch me!" Sarah screamed, her voice a raw, agonizing shriek that echoed off the high ceilings of the lobby. She flinched violently away from his hand, pulling her knees tighter against her stomach. "Don't you dare touch me!"
