Chapter 6 - A New Empire

Six months later.
The courtroom of the Chicago Federal District Court was bright and packed with reporters.
At the defense table sat Judge Raymond Whitaker and his son, Trent. They were both dressed in prison orange, their hands cuffed, their previous arrogance completely gone. Beside them sat Dominic Crane, the head of the Crane Cartel.
The federal prosecutor stood before the judge, presenting a massive, undeniable mountain of evidence—ledger books, encrypted wiretap recordings, and financial transactions that detailed a decade of corruption, bribery, and attempted kidnapping.
The evidence hadn't come from the police. It had been delivered to the Department of Justice in a neat, black executive folder, bearing the seal of the Valdez Group.
Damian had not used violence to end the war. He had used his vast resources to completely dismantle his rivals from the inside out, utilizing the very law they had tried to weaponize against him.
Sitting in the galley, I watched the proceedings with a quiet, peaceful smile.
I was wearing a simple, elegant dark blue dress, my hair falling softly around my shoulders. The faint scar on my lower lip was barely visible now, a tiny reminder of the night my life had changed forever.
Next to me sat Leo, his face bright and healthy, his hand holding mine. On his wrist was a small, high-tech watch that monitored his heart rate—it was perfectly steady, a normal, happy rhythm.
The gavel banged, signaling a recess.
As the guards began to lead the prisoners away, Trent Whitaker’s eyes caught mine in the gallery. He looked at me, then at the little boy sitting beside me, and finally at the tall, imposing figure who had just entered the courtroom from the rear doors.
Damian Valdez walked down the aisle, dressed in an immaculate dark suit. He didn't look at Trent. He didn't look at the judge.
He walked straight to our row, stopping in front of us.
"Are you ready to go?" Damian asked, his voice low and warm.
"Yes, Dad!" Leo giggled, jumping up and wrapping his arms around his father's waist.
Damian picked him up, holding him effortlessly, before turning his pale gray eyes to me. The coldness that had once terrified the entire city was completely gone, replaced by a deep, quiet devotion that belonged to me alone.
He reached out his free hand, his fingers wrapping gently around mine.

"Let's go home, Tessa," Damian whispered.
I smiled, squeezing his hand as we walked out of the courtroom together, leaving the shadows of the past behind us and stepping into a bright, beautiful new dawn.
