Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage of Chicago

The Valdez estate was a sprawling, stone fortress hidden deep within the private, heavily guarded woods of Lake Forest.

It was a beautiful, silent place, surrounded by towering oak trees and high iron fences. For the first two weeks, my life felt like a dream I was terrified of waking up from.

My mother’s bills had been paid in full. Our landlord had not only dropped the eviction but had personally called to apologize for the "misunderstanding." And my days were spent in a sunlit, state-of-the-art medical suite on the second floor of the mansion, monitoring Leo’s heart rate, playing games with his silver robot, and teaching him how to read.

Leo was an incredibly sweet, quiet boy. He had his father's intelligence, but none of his coldness. Within days, he had attached himself to me like a shadow.

"Tessa," Leo said one afternoon, looking up from his drawing pad. "Is my dad a bad man?"

I paused, my hand hovering over the blood pressure cuff I was organizing. "Why would you ask that, Leo?"

"The kids at my old school," he whispered, his eyes dropping to his crayons. "They said their parents told them not to play with me because my dad is a monster. They said he hurts people."

My heart ached for him. I walked over and sat on the edge of his bed, gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind his ear.

"Your dad loves you very much, Leo," I said softly. "In this world, sometimes people have to be tough to protect the people they care about. Your dad is a shield. He keeps the bad things away from you."

"Like you did for me?" he asked, looking up with big, hopeful eyes.

"Yes," I smiled. "Just like I did."

The door to the room slid open, and Damian stepped in. He had his jacket off, his tie loosened. He looked tired, the dark circles under his eyes deeper than usual.

He had been spending long hours in the city, dealing with the fallout of the incident at the Onyx Room. Judge Whitaker had reportedly been furious about what had happened to his son, threatening to use his judicial influence to launch federal investigations into Damian’s shipping companies.

"Tessa," Damian said, his voice low. "Can I speak with you in the study?"

"Of course," I said, kissing Leo’s forehead before standing up.

As we walked down the grand, carpeted hallway, the tension in Damian's shoulders was palpable. He led me into his private study and locked the door behind us.

"The Whitaker situation is escalating," Damian said, leaning against his desk. "The judge has allied himself with the Crane Cartel. They are trying to freeze my assets through a series of corrupt injunctions. They know they can't beat me on the streets, so they are trying to use the law to choke me out."

"Can they do that?" I asked, my chest tightening.

"Only if they have leverage," Damian said, his eyes darkening. "And they think they found it. They are going to target my weakness, Tessa. They are going to try to take Leo."
