Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

A week after the trial, life had returned to a peaceful, steady rhythm, but nothing was ever the same.
On Monday morning, my mom walked back through the front doors of Crestwood Preparatory—not as a silenced cafeteria worker forced to take abuse, but as the head of dietary compliance, backed by state regulations and the unwavering respect of every parent and honest employee in the building. Headmaster Hale was permanently gone, replaced by an interim administrator dedicated to true reform and safety.
As for me, I walked back into my fourth-grade classroom holding my brand-new, non-cardboard pink backpack.
When I walked through the door, my teacher, Mrs. Gable, stopped writing on the whiteboard. The entire class turned around and started clapping.
I blushed, sliding quietly into my desk at the back of the room.
My best friend leaned over, her eyes wide with awe. "Ava! Is it true? Did you really beat a bunch of fancy lawyers in a real courtroom?"

I opened my notebook, pulled out a fresh sheet of paper, and picked up my pencil. I looked out the window at the bright morning sun climbing over the city skyline, knowing that no matter what challenges lay ahead in life, I would always stand up for what was right.
"Yeah," I whispered back with a smile. "We did."
