Chapter 5 - The Aftermath of Victory

By evening, the news had exploded across every major local news station and social media platform.

"NINE-YEAR-OLD GIRL DESTROYS ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOL IN COURT," read the headline on the front page of the city’s largest newspaper, featuring a photo of me standing on my tiptoes at the podium with my cardboard folder.

Our tiny apartment, which had felt so suffocatingly small and heavy with stress just a week ago, suddenly felt like a palace. Flowers, cards, and letters of support from parents across the state began arriving by the dozens. Even local law firms had started calling—not to dismiss us, but to offer scholarships, legal mentorships, and corporate backing for my future education.

Headmaster Victor Hale was suspended indefinitely pending a full state investigation into Crestwood’s administrative practices. The school board held an emergency meeting late that night and issued a public apology to my mother, reinstating her position with a promotion to Director of Nutritional Compliance.

We sat together on our worn-out living room couch, eating takeout pizza off paper plates.

"You know," my mom said, smiling as she wiped a tear from her cheek and squeezed my hand, "when you told me you were going to be my lawyer, I thought you were just playing a game."

"I never play games when it comes to you, Mom," I said, leaning my head against her shoulder.

She kissed the top of my head. "Well, Attorney Moore... what case are you taking next?"

I looked over at my cardboard folder resting on the coffee table, the faded marker hearts catching the warm light of the living room lamp.

"I think," I said with a grin, "I'm going to take a break until Monday. Being a lawyer is exhausting work."

We both laughed—the first truly carefree, happy laugh we had shared in years.
