CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET HIDDEN IN THE BLANKET

Before anyone could react, the little girl carefully reached into the baby’s blanket.
She pulled out a silver hospital bracelet.
The entire ballroom inhaled sharply.
BABY GIRL LAURENT
Saint Aurelia Medical Center
Born three days earlier.
One woman covered her mouth.
Another whispered,
“Oh my God…”
Adrian took the bracelet with trembling fingers.
Then he looked directly at Celeste.
“You told me you miscarried.”
Celeste’s breathing immediately became uneven.
Before she could answer, the little girl spoke again.
“I saw her.”
The room turned toward the child.
“She left the baby in the garbage.”
Lightning flashed beyond the ballroom windows.
Rain hammered against the glass.
And suddenly the glamorous engagement party no longer felt elegant.
It felt criminal.
Celeste shook her head desperately.
“She’s lying!”
But the girl continued.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You cried before you left.”
The sentence landed differently.
Because lies invent details.
Truth remembers pain.
Adrian stared at her.
“How did you find us?”
The child lowered her eyes.
The baby whimpered softly against her shoulder.
“I followed the car.”
Shocked glances spread through the crowd.
“You followed her here?”
The girl nodded.
“I didn’t know where else to go.”
Her wet hair clung to her cheeks.
Exhaustion finally broke through the adrenaline.
“She was cold,” she whispered.
“And hungry.”
The baby began crying harder.
One female guest rushed forward.
“Give her to me.”
The little girl hesitated before carefully handing over the infant.
The woman immediately gasped.
“She’s freezing.”
That shattered whatever illusion remained.
Adrian looked at Celeste as if seeing a stranger.
“You abandoned your own child?”
Celeste’s voice cracked.
“You don’t understand!”
“Then explain it.”
Tears suddenly streamed down her face.
“She would have ruined everything!”
The ballroom erupted.
Guests whispered furiously.
Phones appeared.
Cameras lifted.
Someone quietly called the police.
Adrian staggered backward.
“All this time…”
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
“You were pregnant.”
Celeste reached for him.
May you like
“Adrian, please listen—”
But he stepped away.
