Chapter 6 - A Bright Tomorrow
Six months later — Christmas Eve.
The snow was falling gently over Columbus, coating the city in a soft, quiet beauty. But this year, there was no coldness, no cruelty, and no fear.
Inside the grand dining room of the newly renovated Vance home, a massive ten-foot Christmas tree stood by the stone fireplace, decorated with hundreds of glowing lights, handmade wooden ornaments, and gold ribbons.
The dining table was piled high with food: a golden roasted turkey, fresh rolls, mashed potatoes, and sweet pies.
Sitting around the table were David, Mason, Chloe, Hannah Brooks, and Julian Mercer.
At the head of the table sat Nora, wearing a warm, beautiful red velvet sweater—a sweater she had chosen herself, representing warmth, joy, and love.
David raised his glass of sparkling cider, looking around at his family and friends.
"A year ago tonight," David said, his voice ringing with deep emotion, "this house was filled with shadows and secrets. I was a man lost in the dark, and my daughter was suffering in silence."
He looked down at Nora, smiling brightly.
"But love has a way of finding its way through the darkest storms," David continued. "Tonight, we are whole. We have justice, we have peace, and most importantly, we have each other."
"To family!" Mason and Chloe cheered, raising their glasses.
"To family!" everyone echoed.
After dinner, the children ran to the living room to open their early Christmas presents. Laughter and joyous squeals echoed through the warm house.
Julian walked over to the large picture window—the very window he had looked through a year ago when Nora was standing outside in the freezing cold.
Nora walked up beside him, clutching a new leather-bound sketchbook Julian had given her. She slipped her small hand into his.
Julian looked down at her, smiling gently. "What are you going to draw first?"
Nora looked out at the gentle snowfall outside, then looked around the glowing, warm room filled with her family's laughter.
"I'm going to draw a picture of a car stopping in the snow," Nora said softly, looking up into Julian’s eyes with absolute love. "Because that’s the moment my life began."
