Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The next morning, the sun rose over a glittering, snow-covered Cedar Ridge.

Inside the Vance home, Victoria was sitting at the kitchen island, sipping black coffee. She looked disheveled and agitated. The police investigation from the night before had left her shaken, but she was convinced she could manipulate David once he returned home. After all, she had spent five years bending him to her will.

The front door unlocked and swung open.

Victoria quickly adjusted her expression, putting on a face of tragic, exhausted worry. She stood up, reaching for a tissue.

"David!" she cried out, hurrying toward the foyer. "Oh thank God you're home! I haven't slept a wink! The police were so cruel to me last night, David! That crazy billionaire Mr. Mercer twisted everything—"

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks.

David walked into the house. But he wasn't the tired, slumping man who had left for his factory shift twenty-four hours ago. He stood tall, his eyes cold, hard, and devoid of any warmth.

Beside him walked Nora, her hand tucked safely inside her father's massive grip.

And behind them stepped Julian Mercer, flanked by two sharp-suited high-powered attorneys and a forensic computer technician carrying a silver laptop case.

Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. "David... what is this? Why did you bring these strangers into our home?"

"They aren't strangers, Victoria," David said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "They are the people who opened my eyes."

"David, sweetheart, you're exhausted," Victoria tried, taking a step toward him with her hands outstretched. "Let me make you breakfast. We can talk about Nora's behavior in private—"

"Don't touch me," David snapped, his voice ringing through the house like a whip crack.

Mason and Chloe peeked out from the upstairs hallway, watching nervously.

Julian stepped forward, unbuttoning his coat. "Mrs. Vance—or should I say, Mrs. Victoria Vance-Mortensen, former legal spouse of the late Arthur Vance?"

Victoria went deathly still. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a corpse. "What... what did you just call me?"

Julian’s lead attorney, a formidable woman named Sarah Jenkins, opened a leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of financial documents.

"We spent the last six hours reviewing the encrypted files recovered from Clara Vance's digital drive, along with your public tax records, Mrs. Vance," Sarah stated with surgical precision. "We have definitive proof that you entered into a fraudulent marriage with David Vance using a falsified identity to conceal your prior marriage to his half-brother."

"That's a lie!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking into a panicked shriek. "It's all forged! David, don't listen to them!"

"There's more," Sarah continued smoothly. "We traced the offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands that you opened three years ago under your maiden name. You have been systematically embezzling money from David's joint accounts, intentionally inflating his household debt, while accepting monthly payouts from Arthur Vance's hidden estate."

David stepped forward, his eyes burning with white-hot fury.

"You didn't just abuse my daughter, Victoria," David said, his voice trembling with righteous rage. "You tried to destroy my life to steal the land my grandfather built with his own hands!"

"David, please!" Victoria sobbed, dropping her manipulative act completely as panic seized her. "I did it for us! For our family!"

"You left an eight-year-old child to freeze to death in nineteen-degree weather on Christmas Eve!" Julian interjected, his voice cutting through her desperate cries. "You are not a mother, Victoria. You are a parasite."

The front door opened again. Officer Ramirez and two state investigators stepped inside.

"Victoria Vance," Officer Ramirez announced, pulling out a set of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for felony child endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate financial fraud."

Victoria backed away, her hands shaking frantically. "No! You can't do this! Mason! Chloe! Help me!"

Upstairs, Mason and Chloe stood frozen in horror, watching as their mother was handcuffed. Mason looked at Nora, then looked at David. Tears filled the young boy's eyes.

"Dad..." Mason cried out softly, stepping down the stairs. "I'm sorry... I lied about Nora breaking the ornament. Mom told me she’d take my video games away if I didn't blame Nora..."

Victoria glared at her son. "Shut up, Mason!"

David looked at the boy, his heart breaking for the children who had also been manipulated by this toxic woman. He walked over, placed a hand on Mason’s shoulder, and looked up at Chloe.

"You kids aren't in trouble," David said gently. "Your mother is going to face justice. But I will make sure you are safe."

As Victoria was dragged out of the house screaming and cursing, the dark cloud that had hung over the Vance home for five long years finally shattered into pieces.
