Chapter 17 - THE HEART THAT KEPT FIGHTINGAt 3:42 in the morning, the surgeon came out.

Valeria stood so fast Alejandro had to steady her.

The doctor removed his cap.

His face was tired.

But he was smiling.

“Diego made it.”

Valeria covered her mouth.

The sound that escaped her was half sob, half laugh.

“He’s stable,” the doctor continued. “The next forty-eight hours matter, but the repair went well.”

Valeria folded in on herself.

Alejandro caught her before her knees hit the floor.

For one brief, exhausted moment, she let herself lean against him.

Not because he was powerful.

Because she had been carrying fear alone for too long.

Ramiro looked away respectfully.

Diego was moved to recovery before dawn. Valeria sat beside his bed, holding his hand, watching the machines mark each heartbeat like a miracle.

Alejandro stood outside the room.

He did not enter until Valeria looked up and nodded.

Diego opened his eyes a little after sunrise.

His voice was weak. “Did I win?”

Valeria cried again. “Yes, idiot.”

He smiled faintly. “Good. Tell Mateo I’m keeping the bracelet until I can walk it back myself.”

Alejandro stepped closer. “He’ll like that.”

Diego turned his head. “Are you still scary?”

Alejandro almost smiled. “Sometimes.”

“Good. Be scary to the right people.”

Valeria squeezed Diego’s hand. “Rest.”

He drifted off again.

Outside the room, the world was changing.

Esteban’s arrest triggered raids across Monterrey. Catalina’s lawyers abandoned her one by one. Dr. Ibarra’s records were seized. The stolen foundation funds were frozen. Families began receiving calls they had waited years to receive.

But inside the hospital room, none of that mattered as much as one boy’s heartbeat.

Later that afternoon, Mateo arrived with Valentina, escorted by guards and a child therapist named Dr. Elena Marquez, whom Valeria had chosen herself.

Mateo entered cautiously, holding Alejandro’s hand.

Valeria noticed that.

A small thing.

A huge thing.

He approached Diego’s bed.

Diego opened one eye. “You Mateo?”

Mateo nodded.

“I’m Diego. Your bracelet is lucky.”

Mateo looked at Valeria.

She smiled.

Mateo whispered, “You keep.”

Diego smiled. “Deal.”

Valentina, bored with emotional healing, tried to climb onto the bed.

Alejandro caught her.

She smacked his cheek with one tiny hand.

Everyone froze.

Then Mateo laughed.

Diego laughed weakly.

Valeria laughed.

Even Alejandro smiled.

For one impossible minute, a hospital room full of wounded people sounded like a family.

Dr. Elena watched quietly.

Later, in the hallway, she spoke to Alejandro.

“Mateo’s recovery will not be quick.”

“I know.”

“He may regress. He may rage again. He may test everyone.”

Alejandro looked through the window at his son sitting beside Valeria. “Then we learn.”

Dr. Elena nodded. “Good. But he needs stability. Safe routines. Trusted adults.”

Alejandro knew what she was saying.

His eyes moved to Valeria.

“She has her own life,” he said.

Valeria, standing behind him with a coffee cup, heard.

For once, he did not assume he could buy an answer.

She appreciated that too.

“My life was hospital bills and cleaning jobs yesterday,” she said.

Alejandro turned.

“And now?”

She looked at Mateo. At Valentina. At Diego sleeping safely. At the ruined road behind them and the uncertain one ahead.

“Now I don’t know.”

Alejandro nodded.

“No pressure,” he said. “No debt. Whatever you choose, Diego’s care remains covered.”

Valeria searched his face for manipulation.

She found exhaustion.

And sincerity.

That scared her more.

Because monsters were easier to reject.

Men trying to change were complicated.

Before she could answer, Ramiro approached with a phone.

“It’s Catalina,” he said. “She wants to speak.”

Alejandro’s face hardened. “To me?”

May you like

Ramiro shook his head.

“To Valeria.”
