Chapter 16 - THE OPERATING FLOORThey reached the operating floor through a freight elevator used for clean linens and medical supplies.

Valeria had ridden it a hundred times with bags of Diego’s clothes, cheap sandwiches, and prayers she never said aloud because she was afraid God had stopped listening.

Tonight, Alejandro Ríos stood beside her in that same elevator, silent and dangerous, while Diego sat in a wheelchair trying to look braver than his trembling hands allowed.

When the elevator doors opened, everything was too quiet.

No nurses at the desk.

No rolling carts.

No monitor beeps.

Just the long white hallway leading toward Operating Room Three.

Alejandro held out one arm, stopping Valeria.

A voice came from the far end.

“Bring the boy.”

Esteban stepped into view wearing a doctor’s white coat over his suit.

It was obscene.

Behind him stood two armed men and a surgeon with fear written across his face.

Diego whispered, “That’s the uncle?”

Valeria nodded.

“He looks like bad news with hair gel.”

Under any other circumstances, she might have laughed.

Esteban smiled. “Children do have a way of making things simple.”

Alejandro moved forward. “This ends with me.”

“No,” Esteban said. “It ends with obedience.”

He looked at Valeria.

“You have caused a great deal of trouble for someone who scrubs floors.”

Valeria’s fear sharpened into anger. “And you’ve caused a lot for someone who hides behind women and sick children.”

Esteban’s smile vanished.

Alejandro’s voice was low. “Let the medical team take Diego into surgery. You want leverage? Use me.”

“I already did,” Esteban said. “For years. Your guilt was the easiest leash I ever held.”

He lifted a tablet.

On the screen was Mateo and Valentina inside the mansion nursery.

Live camera footage.

Valeria’s blood froze.

Alejandro went pale.

Esteban continued, “My men are not inside your house yet. But they can be. One word from me, and the little miracles disappear.”

Ramiro’s jaw tightened.

Valeria looked closer at the screen.

Mateo sat on the floor with Valentina, but something was wrong.

He was not afraid.

He was looking slightly above the camera.

As if someone he trusted stood behind it.

Then she saw the thread bracelet still on his wrist.

Mateo lifted that hand.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

He pointed to the left.

Valeria understood.

The camera was not in the room.

It was a recording.

A loop.

She looked at Alejandro.

His eyes flicked to hers.

He understood too.

Esteban was bluffing.

Or he thought he wasn’t.

Alejandro stepped forward. “You always believed fear was stronger than love.”

Esteban frowned.

“It is,” he said.

“No,” Alejandro answered. “Fear works until one person stops running.”

At that moment, the stairwell doors burst open behind Esteban.

Federal agents flooded the hall.

Not Alejandro’s men.

Not cartel rivals.

Real authorities.

Led by a woman in a navy suit carrying Lucía’s files in her hand.

Esteban spun, shocked.

The surgeon dropped to the floor.

Ramiro moved.

Alejandro moved.

Valeria threw herself over Diego’s wheelchair as shouting filled the corridor.

It ended in seconds.

Esteban was forced against the wall, hands behind his back, his silver cane lying useless on the floor.

He looked at Alejandro with pure hatred.

“You called them?”

Alejandro glanced at Valeria.

“No,” he said. “Lucía did.”

Father Anselmo had delivered the files to an investigator Lucía trusted years earlier. When the evidence went public, the case reopened too loudly to bury.

Esteban laughed bitterly. “You think prison can hold me?”

The woman in the navy suit stepped closer. “Maybe not. But the whole world is watching now.”

Valeria looked at Diego.

He was crying silently.

Not from fear.

From relief.

The head surgeon approached. “We need to go now.”

Valeria kissed Diego’s forehead.

He grabbed her hand.

“Vale,” he whispered. “Tell the little boy I’ll give his bracelet back.”

She smiled through tears.

“You’d better.”

They wheeled him into the operating room.

The doors closed.

And Valeria collapsed into the nearest chair, finally allowing herself to shake.

Alejandro sat beside her.

Neither spoke.

For the next five hours, they waited like ordinary people.

May you like

Powerless.

Praying.
