Chapter 4 - The Strike

The glass front door of the diner swung open.
Julian stepped inside, wearing a dark suit, holding a thick black leather briefcase. Behind him stood two men in crisp dark suits carrying official federal badges clipped to their lapels, followed by four armed U.S. Marshals who immediately moved to cover the exits.
Vincent’s bodyguards reached inside their jackets, but the Marshals instantly drew their sidearms.
"Federal agents! Hands where we can see them! Do not move!" the lead Marshal shouted, his voice booming through the small space.
Vincent’s men froze, their faces turning pale as they slowly raised their open hands into the air.
Vincent turned around slowly, his brow furrowed in utter confusion as he looked at Julian. "Julian? What is the meaning of this foolishness? Why are federal agents here?"
Julian walked past the bodyguards, stopping five feet from Vincent. He set his black briefcase on the counter right next to Vincent’s espresso cup.
"They're here for you, Vincent," Julian said, his voice devoid of any warmth or emotion.
Vincent let out a short, frustrated breath. "Have you lost your mind?! Call Miller at the U.S. Attorney’s office right now! Tell him there’s been a mistake—"
"Miller was arrested forty minutes ago at his home in Evanston," Julian interrupted calmly. "So was Judge Harrison, Bank Vice President Vance, and six of your senior captains on the South Side."
The color began to drain from Vincent’s face. "What are you talking about?"
"At 8:00 a.m. this morning," Julian explained, unbuttoning his suit jacket, "using my legal authority as secondary trustee of Moretti Enterprises, I opened Vault 402 at First Chicago Commerce Bank. I handed over thirty years of double-entry financial ledgers, tax evasion records, murder contracts, and offshore wire receipts directly to the Federal Organized Crime Task Force."
Vincent stared at Julian as if he were looking at a stranger. "You... you betrayed me? After everything I did for you?! I raised you! I gave you a future! I made you my son!"
"You didn't make me your son, Vincent," Julian said, taking a step closer, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying flame. "My name isn't Julian Moretti. My name is Julian Vance."
Vincent’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying recognition. "Vance...?"
"Frank Vance was my father," Julian said softly. "The man you buried under eighty tons of cheap concrete thirty years ago to save forty thousand dollars on a foundation."
The silence in the diner was absolute.
Vincent staggered back half a step, his back hitting the counter. For forty years, he had built a fortress of money, fear, and influence, believing he was untouchable. And all the while, the son of the man he had murdered had been sitting at his dinner table, learning his secrets, waiting for the exact right moment to strike.
"You..." Vincent rasped, his voice trembling for the first time in his life. "You spent ten years... lying to me?"
"I spent ten years waiting for you to make a mistake," Julian said, turning his head to glance at Emily. "And yesterday, you threw a coffee cup at a woman who wasn't afraid of you. You got arrogant. You bought this diner. You put your signature on three property leases in twenty-four hours, opening the paper trail we needed to freeze every single one of your accounts."

One of the federal agents stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Vincent Moretti," the agent declared, "you are under arrest for federal racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice."
