Chapter 3 - The Trap at First Light

At 8:30 a.m. the following morning, the rain had stopped, leaving the streets of Maple Ridge slick and dark under a heavy gray sky.

Lou’s Diner was closed. A freshly printed sign hung in the front window: UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Inside, old Lou sat in a booth, his head in his hands, weeping quietly. Across from him sat Vincent Moretti, looking immaculate in a charcoal-gray tailored coat, sipping espresso from a delicate porcelain cup his own bodyguard had brought inside.

Behind Vincent stood four heavy-set men in dark suits. Beside the register, Emily Carter stood in her blue apron, holding her purse over her shoulder.

"You have ten minutes to clear your personal items from the premises, Miss Carter," Vincent’s corporate lawyer, a thin man named Vance, said coldly, sliding a pink termination slip across the counter. "Mr. Moretti has acquired the deed, the business license, and the building structure. You are barred from entering this property under penalty of trespass."

Emily didn't touch the pink paper. She looked at Vincent, who was calmly swirling his espresso.

"You bought a whole building just to fire me?" Emily asked, her voice echoing in the empty diner. "You really are insecure, aren't you?"

Vincent’s espresso cup froze midway to his lips. One of his bodyguards took a step forward, but Vincent raised a single leather-gloved finger to stop him.

Vincent set the cup down slowly. He stood up, towering over the counter, his cold blue eyes locking onto Emily.

"You thought you were special yesterday, didn't you?" Vincent said, his voice a low, raspy gravel. "You thought because I didn't break your neck in front of twelve witnesses that you had won something. But the world doesn't work on courage, girl. It works on ownership. I own this dirt. I own this building. And I can erase you from this city with a single phone call."

Emily looked at him without blinking.

"You don't own me," she said quietly.

"I own your mother's care facility," Vincent replied smoothly, a dark, victorious smile spreading across his face.

Emily’s blood instantly turned to ice. "What did you say?"

"St. Jude’s Hospice Care operates on a property lease owned by Vance Commercial Holdings—a subsidiary of my trust," Vincent purred, taking a step closer to the counter. "At 10:00 a.m. today, their lease is revoked. Your mother will be moved out onto the sidewalk, along with her oxygen equipment, unless you get down on your knees right now, in front of your boss and my men, and beg for my forgiveness."

Lou gasped from the booth. "Vincent... please... she’s just a kid! Don't do this to her mother!"

"Silence!" Vincent barked without looking at Lou.

Emily stood frozen. Her vision blurred with heat, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. This was the monster behind the suit. He didn't just want to win—he wanted to crush every drop of dignity from her soul until she was nothing.

She looked at the clock on the diner wall.

8:55 a.m.

Five minutes left, she thought. Just hold him for five more minutes.

Emily forced her shaking hands to relax. She leaned forward over the counter, looking Vincent straight in his cold eyes.

"Six words," Emily whispered softly.

Vincent frowned, his smile vanishing. "What?"

"Six words," Emily repeated, her voice calm, clear, and ringing through the quiet diner like a bell. "I told you yesterday: Shout at me again, and I’ll end you."

Vincent let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "You're going to end me? With what, girl? Your nine-dollar-an-hour wage?"

"No," a deep voice echoed from the front doorway. "With me."
