Chapter 8 - Blood and PromisesA second later, the sky outside the penthouse windows exploded with the deafening roar of helicopter blades.

A sleek black military-grade chopper hovered directly outside the 80th-floor floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the library.

Inside the library, Santo froze, turning toward the window.

Through the pouring rain and the searchlights of the chopper, a massive figure stood on the helicopter's side runner.

It was Dominic Gallow.

He was holding a heavy tactical shotgun. With an icy glare of pure demonic fury, Dominic raised the shotgun and fired three high-explosive slug rounds directly into the heavy ballistic glass of his own library windows.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The reinforced glass shattered into a million glittering diamonds. Rain and gale-force wind roared into the library, scattering papers and blowing over heavy furniture.

Before the glass had even finished falling, Dominic leapt from the helicopter runner, crashing through the ruined window frame and landing heavily on the wet library carpet in a low roll.

Behind him, four of his elite private security soldiers rappelled down ropes from the helicopter, swinging into the room with weapons drawn.

Santo spun around, raising his submachine gun, but Dominic was faster.

Dominic closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, slamming the butt of his shotgun into Santo’s jaw with enough force to crack bone. Santo stumbled back, spitting blood, but drew a tactical knife, lunging for Dominic's throat.

Dominic dodged the blade, grabbed Santo’s wrist, twisted it back until the bone snapped with an audible CRACK, and slammed the enforcer face-first onto the dark mahogany desk.

"You touched my house," Dominic roared, his voice terrifying, wild, and primal as he pressed his forearm against Santo’s throat, cutting off his air. "You threatened my children."

"Victoria... will... kill you..." Santo choked out, his eyes bulging as his throat was crushed.

"Victoria is already dead," Dominic cold whispered into Santo’s ear.

Santo’s eyes widened in sheer panic just before Dominic slammed a heavy iron paperweight into the side of Santo’s skull, knocking the killer into absolute darkness.

Dominic didn't pause for a second to celebrate. He threw the bloody paperweight aside and rushed to the safe room door. He saw the C4 charge attached to the frame, ripped the detonator wires out with his bare hands, and tossed the explosive across the room.

He grabbed the mechanical handle, punching in the emergency bypass code.

"Layla!" Dominic shouted, throwing the steel door open.

Inside the dark room, Layla sat curled on the floor, shaking uncontrollably, her arms still wrapped tightly around her pregnant bump.

Dominic dropped to his knees, dropping his weapons, and pulled her into his arms. He held her so tightly she could feel the thunderous pounding of his heart against her cheek. He was covered in rainwater, gunpowder residue, and blood, but to Layla, he was the only safe place in the universe.

"I have you," Dominic breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion he had never shown in his thirty-six years of life. He buried his face in her neck, his broad shoulders shaking slightly. "I have you. You're safe. My babies are safe."

May you like

Layla wrapped her arms around his neck, weeping freely into his shoulder. "I thought I lost you... I thought they were going to take them..."

"Never," Dominic swore softly, kissing her cheek, her forehead, her lips with frantic tenderness. "Never again."
