Chapter 5 - The Glass House Shatters

Down in the basement storage area, the heavy steel door flew off its latch with a loud metallic crash.

Sophia scrambled back against the concrete wall, clutching a broken piece of brass pipe in her hand, her eyes wide with desperate defiance.

"Stay back!" she screamed into the darkness.

Four armed men in black tactical gear stepped into the cell. But instead of drawing their weapons, they immediately split into two lines and lowered their heads in respect.

Lorenzo Moretti walked into the cell.

He dropped his gun into its holster and walked directly toward Sophia. Before she could react, the towering mafia boss dropped to both knees on the cold, dirty concrete floor in front of her.

Sophia froze, her breath catching in her throat.

"Mr. Moretti...?" she stammered, her arms dropping in complete shock.

"I was wrong, Sophia," Lorenzo said. His voice was trembling—a sound no man in the New York underworld had ever heard from Lorenzo Moretti. "I listened to lies. I looked at false evidence. And I put your life and your daughter's life in danger."

He reached out and gently touched her hand, helping her up from the floor.

"Your daughter gave me the truth tonight," Lorenzo whispered, looking deeply into her eyes. "She saved my daughter’s life. And now... I need you to help me destroy the people who did this to us."

Sophia burst into tears, the immense weight of terror and despair lifting off her shoulders in a single, surging wave. "Isabella... is she okay?"

"She will be," Lorenzo said, his gray eyes hardening into steel. "As soon as we give her the real medicine."

Ten minutes later.

In the second-floor master nursery, the air was warm and quiet.

Vivian sat beside Isabella’s bed, holding a glass bottle filled with a cloudy white liquid medicine. She had a small plastic syringe ready in her hand.

Dr. Henderson was standing by the window, reviewing a medical chart.

"It's time for her emergency dose, Arthur," Vivian said softly, her voice sweet and full of artificial sorrow. "The poor darling needs to sleep."

"Yes," Dr. Henderson sighed, walking over. "Let's give her five milliliters."

Vivian drew five milliliters of the white liquid into the syringe. She leaned over the sleeping five-year-old girl, bringing the tip of the syringe toward Isabella's lips.

"Drink it, sweetheart," Vivian whispered, a dark, hidden gleam of triumph dancing in her eyes. "It will all be over soon..."

BANG!

The double doors of the nursery were kicked open with such violent force that one of the heavy wood panels cracked straight down the middle.

Vincent, who had been sitting in the corner armchair, leaped to his feet, reaching for his armpit holster.

"DON'T TOUCH THAT WEAPON, VINCENT!" Dante’s voice bellowed from the hallway.

A dozen armed men flooded into the room, their red laser sights instantly painting target dots over Vincent’s chest and forehead. Vincent froze, his hands slowly rising into the air, his face turning gray as paper.

Vivian gasped, dropping the syringe onto the duvet. "Lorenzo! What is the meaning of this?! What are these guards doing in Isabella’s room?!"

Lorenzo walked into the room.

Behind him walked Sophia, carrying Emma securely in her arms.

Vivian’s eyes widened in absolute terror as she saw Sophia standing unharmed, flanked by Lorenzo's personal bodyguards.

"Lorenzo, darling," Vivian stammered, backing away toward the window. "She... she escaped from the basement! Vincent, why isn't she locked up?!"

"Vincent isn't going to help you, Vivian," Lorenzo said softly. He walked over to the nightstand, picked up the glass bottle of white liquid medication, and turned it over in his hand. "Dr. Henderson."

The cardiologist stepped forward, terrified by the heavily armed men surrounding the room. "Yes, Lorenzo?"

"Take this bottle," Lorenzo said, tossing it to the doctor. "Send it to the state lab under police guard. Tell them to test it for Cardiotoxin-B7."

Dr. Henderson’s jaw dropped. "Cardiotoxin...? Lorenzo, that's a lethal cardiac poison!"

Vivian let out a sharp, hysterical shriek. "He’s insane! The grief has made him insane! Lorenzo, I loved your wife! I love Isabella! I would never—"

"Shut your mouth," Lorenzo snapped. His voice was so cold it seemed to freeze the very air in the room.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a stack of printed financial documents and email records, tossing them directly onto Vivian’s chest. The paper pages scattered over her pink silk robe like white fallen leaves.

"Twelve million dollars," Lorenzo said, stepping so close to Vivian that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "You poisoned my motherless child for twelve million dollars."

Vivian looked down at the papers. She saw her private email address printed at the top of the page. She saw the Swiss bank account numbers.

She collapsed back against the windowsill, her elaborate facade crumbling into pathetic, ugly sobs.

"It was Vincent!" Vivian shrieked, pointing her shaking finger at the lieutenant standing against the wall. "He planned it! He said Lorenzo would never suspect us! He forged the documents!"

"You lying bitch!" Vincent roared, trying to step forward, but two guards slammed him violently against the wall, cuffing his wrists behind his back with heavy steel restraints.

Lorenzo didn't even look at Vincent. His eyes remained fixed on Vivian.

"You threatened Sophia's daughter," Lorenzo said quietly. "You told her you would cut her neck if she spoke the truth."

He turned to his chief security officer.

"Dante."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Take Vincent and Vivian down to the docks," Lorenzo ordered, his tone devoid of any human mercy. "Hand them over to Commissioner Miller at NYPD Homicide, along with the flash drive and the toxic medicine. Ensure they spend the rest of their natural lives in maximum-security federal isolation."

"No! Lorenzo, please!" Vivian screamed as two guards grabbed her by her arms, dragging her screaming and kicking down the long carpeted hallway. "LORENZO! PLEASE! FORGIVE ME!"

Her screams faded into the distance until the estate became utterly quiet once more.
