Chapter 4 - The Digital Bloodstain

The grand study was locked from the inside.

Lorenzo sat behind his heavy mahogany desk, the blue light of his computer monitor reflecting off the harsh angles of his face. Standing beside him was his chief intelligence officer, a quiet, lean man named Dante who handled the syndicate's high-tech security operations.

Dante inserted the silver flash drive into a secured, air-gapped laptop.

"It’s heavily encrypted, Boss," Dante whispered, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard like lightning. "Whoever owned this used a military-grade triple-DES algorithm. Give me two minutes..."

Lorenzo didn't speak. He stared at his desktop screen, where a live video feed showed Isabella’s bedroom.

On the screen, Vivian sat in an armchair beside Isabella’s bed, tenderly holding the sleeping girl's hand while Dr. Henderson checked the IV drip. To anyone watching, Vivian looked like a devoted stepmother-in-waiting, consumed by grief.

“If Lorenzo sees these offshore transfer logs, he’ll throw us both into the East River before midnight.”

Emma's childish voice echoed in Lorenzo’s mind like a ringing bell.

BEEP.

The laptop screen flashed green.

"I'm in," Dante breathed, taking a quick step back. "Jesus... Boss, look at this."

Lorenzo leaned forward.

The drive contained hundreds of digitized documents. There were offshore banking statements from Grand Cayman, wire transfer receipts totaling twelve million dollars over the last eighteen months, and forged logistics manifests from the Moretti shipping terminals in Newark.

Every single transfer was signed using Lorenzo’s private digital key.

And the recipient of those stolen millions?

Bellini Holdings LLC. A shell company registered in Panama under the joint names of Vivian Bellini and Vincent Russo.

Lorenzo felt the blood drain completely from his face, replaced by an icy, absolute fury that burned hotter than any fire.

"Vincent," Lorenzo whispered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "My father took Vincent out of the slums when he was twelve years old. I made him my second-in-command."

"There's more, Boss," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave as he opened a folder labeled Medical.

Inside were scanned PDF files of chemical analysis reports from an independent lab in New Jersey.

The documents detailed a synthetic compound named Cardiotoxin-B7—an odorless, colorless digitalis derivative that, when administered in small, daily doses, mimicked the exact symptoms of progressive heart failure in pediatric patients.

Below the analysis was a saved email exchange between Vivian Bellini and a disgraced chemist in Switzerland:

From: VB

To: Dr. K

Subject: Timeline

The child’s condition must deteriorate gradually over three months. It must look like natural degradation from her existing defect. Once the maid is framed for the theft, the final dose will close the estate before the financial audit in November.

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

His breathing stopped entirely.

The woman he had trusted in his home... the woman who had sat at his dining table and kissed his daughter's forehead... had been systematically poisoning his five-year-old child for months just to cover up a twelve-million-dollar embezzlement scheme!

And Sophia—the poor, desperate housemaid he had locked in a dark basement—had stayed silent because Vivian had threatened to murder her toddler!

A low, guttural roar burst from Lorenzo’s throat.

He stood up, grabbing the heavy brass lamp on his desk, and smashed it against the wall with such terrifying force that the glass shade disintegrated into dust.

"Dante," Lorenzo growled, his eyes bloodshot, his body shaking with an apocalyptic rage.

"Boss!" Dante stood at attention, his hand instinctively resting on his sidearm.

"Bring my men from the armory," Lorenzo commanded, his voice shaking the heavy oak walls of the study. "Get the maid out of the basement. Bring her to me right now. And if Vincent or Vivian try to leave this property..."

Lorenzo pulled a heavy, custom-engraved silver pistol from his desk drawer and slammed a fresh magazine into the grip.

"...shoot them in the legs."
