Chapter 6 - A Real Heart

Six months later.

The spring sun warmed the private garden behind the fully renovated Duca estate. The grim, dark corridors that once held secrets and silence were now bright, filled with fresh flowers and open windows.

In the middle of the lawn, a small girl in a bright pink dress was running after a golden retriever puppy, her laughter echoing off the brick walls.

Lorenzo stood on the patio, wearing a simple linen shirt, holding two glasses of lemonade. Sarah walked up beside him, a soft, peaceful smile on her face.

"She hasn't stopped running since we got here," Sarah said softly, watching her daughter. "Sometimes I still wake up thinking this is a dream, Lorenzo. That we're still living in the small basement apartment, hiding."

"It's not a dream, Sarah," Lorenzo said gently, handing her a glass. "You and Emma gave me back my life. This home was a grave before she walked across that ballroom floor."

Emma came racing up the stone steps, her knees slightly muddy, holding a new piece of paper behind her back.

"Daddy Lorenzo! Daddy Lorenzo!" she called out happily.

Lorenzo smiled, dropping to one knee as he had done on the floor of the ballroom six months ago. "Yes, Emma?"

"I made a new rule," she said solemnly, pulling the paper out.

It was a drawing of three people—a man, a woman, and a little girl—holding hands under a giant, bright yellow sun. At the top, written in clear, neat letters with help from her mother, it said:

Official Adoption Paper: Not for one day. For always.

Lorenzo looked at the paper, his chest swelling with an emotion he thought had died on a rainy street three years ago. He looked up at Sarah, who nodded through tears of joy.

Lorenzo signed his name on the bottom line with his father’s old fountain pen, then picked Emma up, spinning her around in the warm spring air as she giggled uncontrollably.

The dark legacy of the Duca family was gone, burned away by the truth. In its place stood a real father, a real family, and a heart no longer drawn in crayon, but forged in love that would last forever.
