Chapter 4 - The Truth on the Stand

The courtroom was so silent you could hear the tick of the wall clock over the judge's bench.

Grace sat in the wooden witness box, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Though her heart was hammering, she looked directly at Judge Jenkins, her voice clear and unwavering as she began to testify.

"My mother, Maria Reyes, worked for the Mercer family from 1992 until 1995," Grace testified. "She kept detailed daily journals of everything that occurred inside the estate. She documented how Arthur Mercer systematically isolated Evelyn Mercer, forced her to take unprescribed sedatives, and kept her locked in her quarters."

Harrison Vance’s attorney leaped up again. "Objection! Hearsay! Unsubstantiated claims from a deceased housekeeper!"

"Your Honor," Marcus Sterling interrupted, stepping forward with a sealed legal folder. "We offer into evidence Exhibit A: The original handwritten diary of Evelyn Mercer, hidden inside a locked box by Maria Reyes, alongside a notarized affidavit witnessed by Mr. Harrison Vance himself in 1995."

Marcus walked over to the defense table and slammed a yellowed sheet of paper directly in front of Vance.

"In 1995, Mr. Vance was not just Arthur Mercer’s corporate lawyer," Marcus announced to the room. "He was the young notary who signed off on the forged power-of-attorney documents transferring Evelyn Mercer’s Swiss inheritance into Arthur Mercer’s shell companies!"

Harrison Vance stood up so fast his chair fell backward, clattering against the hardwood floor. "This is a setup! That document is a fake!"

"Is it, Mr. Vance?" Marcus replied coldly. "Because three hours ago, under an emergency international judicial request, Swiss prosecutors opened Vault #408 in Zurich—unlocked using the key preserved in this very box. Inside were the original corporate ledger sheets showing that ninety percent of the founding capital used to launch Mercer International came directly from Evelyn Mercer’s private family trust."

Marcus turned to face the judge.

"Under state and federal law, assets acquired through felony fraud, domestic abuse, and homicidal conversion cannot be passed through a will. Arthur Mercer never owned Mercer International. Evelyn Mercer did. And under her legal, unrevoked 1994 will—found in the Swiss vault this morning—one hundred percent of her estate passes exclusively to her son, Daniel Mercer."

Judge Jenkins stared at the documents presented by Marcus, her eyebrows raised in shock. She looked down at Vance, whose face was now slick with sweat, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Jenkins said, her voice dripping with ice. "You will sit down immediately, or I will have federal marshals place you in handcuffs."

Vance slowly collapsed back into his chair, staring at Daniel in total horror.

Daniel slowly stood up from the plaintiff’s table. He didn't look at Vance. He didn't look at the media gallery. He walked over to the witness stand, holding out his hand to Grace.

"Thank you, Grace," Daniel said softly, his eyes filled with immense warmth and gratitude.

Grace smiled, placing her hand in his as she stepped down from the witness box.

Judge Jenkins brought her gavel down with a loud, final thud.

"This court finds the purported codicil presented by Harrison Vance to be prima facie fraudulent. All assets of Mercer International are hereby frozen pending a full federal forensic investigation into the estate of Arthur Mercer. Mr. Vance, you are ordered to surrender your passport to the court clerk immediately."

The gallery erupted into chaos. Reporters sprinted for the doors to broadcast the news.

As the crowd surged, Harrison Vance suddenly lunged past his attorneys, reaching into his coat pocket with a crazed, desperate look in his eyes, screaming at Daniel: "You ruined everything! Your father built that empire! You think you can take it all with a maid’s lies?!"

Vance pulled out a heavy brass paperweight he had snatched from the defense desk and swung it wildly toward Daniel’s head.

"Daniel!" Grace screamed.

Without a second thought, Daniel stepped in front of Grace, catching Vance’s wrist mid-air with a brutal, crushing grip. He twisted Vance’s arm back with terrifying precision, forcing the man to his knees as the brass paperweight crashed uselessly to the floor.

Three federal marshals tackled Vance to the ground, slamming him onto his stomach and pinning his arms behind his back.

"Harrison Vance," the lead marshal barked, snapping handcuffs onto his wrists. "You are under arrest for court fraud, obstruction of justice, and attempted assault."

Daniel stood over the groveling lawyer, wiping a fleck of dust from his suit jacket. He looked down at Vance with cold, absolute disdain.

"My mother’s song was meant to keep me safe from monsters, Vance," Daniel said quietly. "You and my father just forgot that little birds eventually grow up."
