Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next morning, the Manhattan Federal Courthouse was surrounded by a wall of reporters, television news vans, and flashing police lights.

The headline on every major news outlet read: MERCER INTERNATIONAL ON THE BRINK: SURPRISE WILL THREATENS BILLIONAIRE DANIEL MERCER’S EMPIRE.

Harrison Vance, a sharp-faced man of sixty-five in a ten-thousand-dollar suit, stood on the courthouse steps surrounded by a dozen high-powered corporate attorneys. He was smirking for the cameras, exuding the smug confidence of a man who believed he had executed the perfect long-game heist.

Inside the green room on the third floor of the courthouse, Daniel stood at the window, staring down at the swarm of cameras. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his expression unreadable.

Behind him, Grace sat on the leather couch, smoothing down the skirt of her navy blue dress—a dress Daniel had his personal stylist deliver to her suite that morning. Lucy sat beside her, happily coloring in a picture book with a box of crayons.

"Are you sure you want me in that courtroom, Daniel?" Grace asked nervously. "I'm just a maid. Vance's lawyers will try to tear my mother's reputation apart."

Daniel turned around, walking over to stand directly in front of her. He knelt down so he was eye-level with her, taking both of her hands in his.

"Grace," he said softly, his touch sending a warm spark through her chest. "Your mother was the only person in that house who had the courage to protect my mother when everyone else was bought off by my father's money. You aren't just a witness. You and Lucy are the reason I'm still standing today."

Grace looked into his intense, grey eyes and felt her anxiety melt away, replaced by a strange, profound sense of trust. In forty-eight hours, this man had transformed from a distant, terrifying employer into the protector she had spent her whole life searching for.

"We're with you, Daniel," Grace whispered softly.

The heavy oak doors of the room opened, and Daniel’s chief legal council, Marcus Sterling, stepped inside.

"It’s time, Daniel," Marcus said grimly. "Judge Jenkins is taking the bench. Vance’s team has already presented their fraudulent codicil. They're demanding an immediate freezing order on all your personal and corporate accounts."

Daniel stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Let’s go end this."

The main courtroom was packed to capacity. The air was thick with tension as spectators, journalists, and high-ranking corporate executives filled the gallery.

Harrison Vance sat at the defense table, leaning over to whisper something to his lead counsel, a smug grin plastered across his face. When he saw Daniel enter through the side doors, flanked by Marcus Sterling and a stunning woman holding a young child, his grin faltered slightly.

"Your Honor," Marcus Sterling announced, stepping up to the podium before Judge Sarah Jenkins. "Before the court considers Mr. Vance’s motion regarding the corporate codicil, we request permission to introduce emergency evidence regarding the origin of Mercer International’s foundational capital."

Harrison Vance’s lawyer immediately jumped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! This is a simple probate and corporate governance hearing! The origin of the company’s capital thirty years ago is completely irrelevant!"

"It is entirely relevant, Your Honor," Marcus countered loudly, his voice echoing through the vaulted room. "Because the codicil Mr. Vance claims was signed by Arthur Mercer five years ago relies on assets that Arthur Mercer never legally owned. They were stolen from his late wife, Evelyn Mercer, through physical coercion, illegal drugging, and ultimate murder."

A collective, gasp rippled through the gallery. Reporters immediately began typing furiously on their phones.

Judge Jenkins slammed her gavel down sharply. "Order! Order in this court!" She glared down at Marcus over her glasses. "Mr. Sterling, that is a monstrous allegation to make in a civil proceeding. Do you have immediate evidence to back up such a claim?"

"We do, Your Honor," Marcus said smoothly.

He turned and pointed toward Grace.

"We call Ms. Grace Reyes to the stand—daughter of the late Maria Reyes, who was personal caretaker to Evelyn Mercer until her death in 1995."

Harrison Vance’s face drained of all color. He pushed back his chair, whispering frantically to his lawyer, his smug composure completely shattering in an instant.

Grace took a deep breath, handed Lucy’s crayon box to Thomas in the front row, and walked steadily toward the witness stand.
