Chapter 5 - The Fallen Book

The apartment was dead.
For three days, rain battered the penthouse windows. Maisie had returned to her silence—not the angry, defiant silence of before, but a hollow, broken state that was infinitely worse. She sat at her desk, refusing to eat, refusing to speak, her eyes fixed on the empty chair across from her.
Serena spent seventy-two straight hours working from her home office, driven by a desperate, manic energy. The Aegis-7 launch was four days away. Julian’s legal team was pressing for an emergency summary judgment to freeze the platform.
At midnight on Sunday, Serena sat amidst a mountain of legal briefs, court depositions, and financial records. Her eyes were bloodshot, her head throbbing with a migraine that no painkiller could touch.
She reached for a glass of water, her hand clumsy with exhaustion, and knocked a stack of discovery documents off the edge of her desk.
The heavy blue binders crashed to the floor, spilling hundreds of loose pages across the hardwood.
Serena groaned, dropping to her knees to gather the paper.
As she pulled back a heavy cardboard box of Julian’s old corporate filings, she saw something tucked deep beneath the lowest shelf of her built-in bookcases—something that had been hidden there for months, covered in thick gray dust.
It was a book. A heavy, leather-bound volume with a cracked navy spine and gold leaf lettering.
The Odyssey.
Serena’s heart gave a violent, painful thud.
She pulled it out. The leather was worn, exactly like the book Callum had brought to the apartment. But when she opened the front cover, she didn't find old handwriting from a grandfather.
She found a small, sleek black USB flash drive taped inside the hollowed-out back cover, alongside a typed document bearing the letterhead of Vanguard Asset Protection.
Serena’s hands began to shake as she pulled the document out and read it under the harsh desk lamp.
It was an internal memo dated eight weeks ago—written by Julian’s lead corporate investigator.
SUBJECT: Operation Blackwood Infiltration / Compromise Strategy
TARGET: Serena Blackwood / Maisie Blackwood
METHOD: Subject Vance Global Holdings will execute a wire transfer of $50,000 into an inactive estate account associated with Callum Voss (former military specialist currently applying for private security roles in NY). Voss will be listed as a reference on planted application materials to trigger red flags during Blackwood’s internal background sweep.
GOAL: Frame Voss as a corporate spy once he establishes an emotional bond with the child. The resulting emotional disruption will destabilize Serena Blackwood prior to the Aegis-7 court hearing, forcing a rapid settlement on custody and IP rights.
Serena read the words once. Then twice.
The blood drained completely from her face.
It was a setup.
Julian had never hired Callum. He had framed Callum. He had known Serena’s security team would run a sweep, knew they would find the planted wire transfer, and knew Serena’s paranoia—her deep, trauma-forged inability to trust anyone—would cause her to destroy the only good thing that had entered her daughter's life in years.
Julian hadn't just attacked her company. He had used her own wounded heart to strike a dagger into her daughter.
Serena dropped the paper. She looked at the book in her hands.
It wasn't a fallen book from Julian’s library. It was the trap Julian had left behind—the very book Maisie had tried to return to him two years ago, which Julian had used to hide his covert surveillance tools before abandoning his family.
"Oh god," Serena choked out, burying her face in her trembling hands. "What have I done?"

She didn't call her lawyers. She didn't call Vance.
She grabbed the flash drive, her coat, and her car keys, and ran out into the rainy night.
