Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Wall Street

The rain hit Manhattan hard on Friday morning, turning the streets into slick, charcoal-colored ribbons. Inside the high-floor offices of Blackwood Systems on Park Avenue, the air was tense enough to snap glass.

Serena sat at the head of the dark mahogany boardroom table. Around her sat seven senior board members, three corporate attorneys, and her Chief Financial Officer, Arthur Pendelton—a man whose pale skin and silver hair gave him the appearance of a permanent ghost.

"Julian has formally filed the injunction in the Southern District Court," Arthur said, sliding a thick blue folder across the glass table. "He’s claiming that the core encryption algorithm behind our new security platform, Aegis-7, was developed using intellectual property he co-created during your marriage."

Serena didn't open the folder. Her eyes were hard as cut diamonds. "Julian hasn't written a line of executable code since 2018. He was a figurehead. He ran marketing and took the credit while I spent eighteen hours a day in the lab."

"The court doesn't care about emotional truth, Serena," said Marcus Thorne, the company’s lead litigator. "They care about paper trails. Julian produced a series of logged notebooks from five years ago—notebooks that bear your company seal and his signature."

Serena’s pulse hammered in her throat. "He stole them."

"If he can prove those notebooks contain the foundational logic for Aegis-7, the judge will freeze the launch next month," Thorne warned. "The market valuation will plummet by forty percent before the bell rings on Monday. The board will be forced to consider his settlement offer."

"Which is?" Serena asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

"Two hundred million dollars in liquid stock, plus joint legal custody of Maisie."

Serena’s hand slammed onto the table, making the crystal water glasses ring. The entire room went dead silent.

"He will never lay a finger on my daughter again," Serena hissed, her eyes blazing. "He used her as a bargaining chip during the divorce, and he's using her now to leverage my company. He doesn't want Maisie. He wants to bleed me until I collapse."

"Serena, as your counsel, I must advise you to separate the child from the corporate asset—" Thorne began.

"Maisie is not an asset!" Serena stood up, her posture rigid, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "This meeting is adjourned. Thorne, file a counter-motion for fraud. Arthur, find me the original hard-drive logs from the 2021 server migration. If Julian altered those physical notebooks, I will prove it."

She swept out of the boardroom, her heels clicking like gunshots on the polished marble.

Back in her private office, Serena leaned against the desk, closing her eyes. Her head was pounding. She felt the old, familiar panic rising—the claustrophobic sensation that the walls of her life were closing in, that no matter how much money she earned or how many guards she hired, she could not protect the things that actually mattered.

Her phone buzzed on the desk. She snatched it up, expecting her lawyers.

It was an image text from an unknown number.

She opened it. It was a photo of Maisie.

Serena’s heart stopped.

Maisie wasn't in her study. She was standing in Central Park, under a massive oak tree, wearing yellow rubber boots and a red raincoat. Her face was covered in mud. She was laughing—a genuine, head-back, wild laugh that Serena hadn't seen or heard in over two years. Next to her, a ten-year-old girl with dark curly hair and Callum’s same steady grey eyes was holding up a enormous, dripping frog.

A text followed from Callum: She tried to calculate the trajectory of a bullfrog jump using physics formulas. I told her to just watch it jump first. We're at the Ramble. She had hot chocolate. Don't fire me.

Serena stared at the screen. Tears burned behind her eyes, hot and sudden. She touched the screen, tracing the curve of her daughter's laughing mouth.

Who are you, Callum Voss? she thought.

She picked up her desk phone and dialed her private security director, Vance.

"Vance," she said, her voice instantly returning to its crisp, authoritative shell. "I need a full, unredacted background clearance on Callum Voss. I know we ran the basic check, but I want everything. His military record, his unit, his wife's departure, his bank statements. Everything."

"Understood, Ms. Blackwood," Vance replied. "Is there a security concern?"

Serena looked back at the photo on her phone—at Maisie's muddy face and bright, sparkling eyes.

"No," Serena whispered. "I just... I need to know what kind of man can undo two years of damage in three days."
