Chapter 6: A True Empire

The annual Chicago Logistics Gala was held at the Navy Pier ballroom, a glittering event filled with the city’s most influential figures. Three years ago, Ethan had stood in a similar room feeling small, handled, and deeply ashamed of who he was.
Tonight, he walked down the red carpet with absolute confidence.
He wore a classic black tuxedo, his shoulders broad and relaxed. But the photographers weren't just flashing their cameras at him. They were capturing the stunning woman on his arm.
Rosa looked breathtaking in a simple, elegant midnight-blue gown. She didn't wear a six-carat diamond ring. Instead, she wore a beautiful, vintage gold band that had belonged to Ethan's mother—a ring Ethan had placed on her finger three weeks earlier when she had said yes in the middle of their cozy kitchen.
As they entered the grand ballroom, a few high-society snobs whispered in the corners, recognizing the former housekeeper. But Ethan didn't hide her. He led her straight to the center of the room, his hand resting securely against the small of her back.
A prominent reporter stepped forward, microphone in hand. "Mr. Cole! Your company just secured the largest green-energy shipping contract in North America. To what do you attribute your incredible success this year? Is it a new corporate strategy?"
Ethan paused, looking down at his beautiful wife, whose eyes were filled with absolute pride and love. He smiled, and for the first time in front of a thousand cameras, he spoke with the raw, honest voice of the boy from the south side who had built an empire with his own two hands.
"The strategy didn't change, completely," Ethan said into the microphone, his voice echoing through the ballroom. "I just stopped letting people tell me I was the problem. I found a woman who loved the foundation I built, not the polish I put on it. My success belongs to my family."
The ballroom erupted into applause.
As they walked onto the dance floor, the soft music swelling around them, Rosa rested her head against his chest. "You looked very handsome on camera, Mr. Cole," she whispered playfully.

Ethan pulled her closer, his heart full to bursting as he looked out over the city he had conquered, completely at peace with the man he had always been.
"I'm just a guy who got lucky, Rosa," Ethan murmured, kissing her forehead. "The real kind of lucky."
