Chapter 5: The Unpolished Truth

Six Months Later
The pristine, sterile perfection of the penthouse had changed. The cold white marble kitchen now held a colorful magnetic calendar on the refrigerator, a small basket of children's books in the corner, and the warm, comforting aroma of traditional Mexican stew bubbling on the stove.
Ethan sat at the kitchen island, a tablet in front of him showing Cole Freight's stock at an all-time high. But he wasn't looking at the numbers. He was watching Rosa.
She was standing by the stove, wearing a simple sundress, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders. Over the last six months, as the corporate chaos settled, Ethan had spent his evenings sitting right here, talking to her. Not as an employer to an employee, but as a man discovering a woman whose kindness, strength, and quiet dignity were everything he had ever truly wanted.
They had shared stories of his mother, her childhood in Michoacán, and the struggles of building a life from nothing. Rosa didn't try to fix his accent. She didn't adjust his ties. When he laughed loudly, her eyes danced with genuine joy.
"Ethan," Rosa said, turning around with two bowls of soup, a soft blush creeping up her cheeks. "You're staring again."
"I'm just realizing how lucky I am," Ethan smiled, taking her hand as she set the bowl down. He didn't let go. "And for the first time in my life, I actually mean it."
Rosa looked into his warm brown eyes, her heart beating faster. "You're a good man, Ethan Cole. You don't need status to prove that."
"Hey! Look what I drew!"
Lily burst into the kitchen, wearing a bright yellow t-shirt and holding up a piece of construction paper. The drawing featured three stick figures holding hands beneath a massive, poorly drawn truck. One figure had a big, exaggerated smile and a crown.
Ethan lifted Lily up, placing her on his knee. "Who’s this handsome guy with the crown, Lil?"

"That's you!" Lily giggled, wiping a smudge of crayon from her nose. "Because you're the king of the trucks, and you have a happy face now."
Ethan laughed out loud—a booming, uninhibited south-side laugh that filled the entire penthouse. He looked at Rosa, who was smiling at them both with a warmth that money could never buy.
