Edward Sterling sat on a stone bench beneath a massive weeping willow tree, a glass of fresh lemonade in his hand, a deep, radiant peace settling over his aged features. He looked twenty years younger now, his heart filled by the daily laughter of the family he had fought so hard to reclaim.
Out on the green lawn, Leo—now working as the chief legal counsel for the foundation—was reviewing operational files on a tablet, a confident, brilliant smile on his face as he talked with Julian Vance.
Lily ran across the grass, her clean white dress catching the breeze, a golden retriever puppy chasing close behind her. She reached the porch, saw Edward watching her, and ran over, jumping onto the bench beside him and throwing her arms around his neck.
"Grandpa," Lily whispered, pulling the silver necklace from her collar and letting it catch the sunlight. "Do you think Mommy can see us right now?"
Edward smiled, his eyes filling with soft, happy tears as he looked up at the beautiful, clear blue sky. He wrapped his arm tightly around his granddaughter, watching Leo walk over to join them, his hand resting supportively on his sister’s shoulder.
"I know she can, sweetheart," Edward said, his voice resonant and absolute.
