Chapter 4 — The Reunion in Courtroom 4B

The following morning, the federal building in Lower Manhattan was buzzing with media vans. The news of Victoria Sterling's midnight arrest for criminal conspiracy and human trafficking had leaked to the press, sending the Sterling Global stock into a volatile spin.
Inside the quiet, wood-paneled interior of Courtroom 4B, Leo Vance stood behind the prosecution table, reviewing a mountain of financial files. His tie was straight, his expression intensely focused. At twenty, he was the youngest legal mind in the district, driven by a quiet, burning desire to prove himself in a world where he had always felt like an outsider.
The heavy double doors of the courtroom opened.
Leo didn't look up until he heard the slow, measured click of a cane, followed by the soft footsteps of a child.
He lifted his eyes and froze.
Edward Sterling walked down the center aisle, wearing a stark, perfectly tailored charcoal suit. Beside him, holding his hand tightly, was Lily. She was no longer wearing her tattered clothes; she wore a simple, elegant navy blue coat, her hair brushed into soft waves.
"Mr. Sterling," Leo said, stepping out from behind his table, his professional guard instantly rising. "This is a restricted legal preparation room. If you're here to negotiate a plea agreement for your sister-in-law, I assure you, the Department of Justice is not interested."
"I am not here for Victoria, Leo," Edward said, his voice thick with an emotion that caught the young attorney off guard.
Edward stopped three feet away. He reached into his breast pocket and placed the original, twin-stamped hospital birth registry onto the wooden table, right on top of Leo's legal briefs.
Leo frowned, his gray eyes scanning the yellowed paper. As his eyes tracked down to the section marked Maternal Lineage: Elena Sterling, his breath caught. He looked down at the signature at the bottom—the exact same signature that was on the sealed adoption papers locked inside his private safe at home.
"What... what is this?" Leo stammered, his legal composure fracturing.
"You've been looking for your mother for five years, Leo," Edward whispered, his eyes shining with tears.
"Her name was Elena. She loved you before she died. And the woman you are prosecuting didn't just steal money from my company—she stole you from my arms twenty years ago. You aren't just the prosecutor in this case, Leo. You are the rightful heir to the estate you're investigating. And this is your sister, Lily."
Lily stepped forward, her small hands trembling as she pulled the old silver necklace from her collar, opening the miniature portrait.

Leo looked from the portrait to Lily’s face, then down to his own wrist, where his crescent birthmark burned beneath his watch strap. The courtroom seemed to lose its gravity. For twenty years, he had been a boy with no history. In a single second, the universe had given him a family.
He dropped to his knees, his hands shaking as he pulled Lily into a tight, fierce embrace. Edward stepped forward, his massive arms wrapping around both of his grandchildren, the twenty-year night of grief finally breaking into the morning light.
