Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The high-stakes criminal trial of the century commenced three weeks later. The courtroom was a battlefield. Because of the intense public interest, the judge allowed the proceedings to be broadcast live nationwide.

Lucas sat at the defense table, looking emaciated, his glamorous high-society aura completely stripped away. Patricia sat next to him, her face rigid, refusing to look at the gallery. Their high-priced defense attorney, Richard Sterling, stood at the podium, attempting a desperate character assassination.

"Your Honor," Sterling argued, pointing a dramatic finger at me. "Dr. Emma Harrington is a deeply troubled woman. Postpartum psychosis is a well-documented medical phenomenon. My client, Lucas, did not push her into a storm. He attempted to restrain her as she had a manic episode and fled the house with the infant. He locked the door only to protect the property after she threw the keys in his face. This entire corporate lawsuit is nothing more than a calculated, vindictive attempt to hijack Harrington Logistics under the guise of an emotional divorce."

A murmur went through the courtroom. Some reporters began typing frantically.

"The defense rests its preliminary motion," Sterling said, sitting down with a confident smirk.

Arthur Vance stood up calmly. "The prosecution calls its star witness: Dr. Evelyn Martinez, Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Jude’s Hospital."

Dr. Martinez took the stand. She was the physician who had treated me the night of the blizzard.

"Dr. Martinez," Arthur asked, "can you describe the physical state of Emma Harrington and her daughter when they arrived at the ER?"

"Certainly," Dr. Martinez said, adjusting her glasses. "Emma was suffering from stage-two hypothermia. Her core temperature was dangerously low. But what was remarkable was the infant. The baby was completely unharmed, warm, and dry. Emma had stripped off her own inner layers of clothing, exposing her own skin to the freezing air, wrapping the baby in her own body heat inside her coat. A woman suffering from a manic, psychotic episode does not demonstrate that level of precise, calculated, self-sacrificing maternal protection."

"Thank you, Doctor," Arthur said. "Now, I would like to introduce Exhibit G: the forensic analysis of the front door lock mechanism of the Harrington residence."

The projector screen displayed a highly detailed technical breakdown of the smart-lock system installed at the house.

"As the court can see," Arthur explained, "the lock was not engaged from the inside manually in a panic. The digital logs show the lock was activated via a smartphone app belonging to Lucas Harrington at exactly 11:02 PM. Furthermore, the external motion sensors show Emma Harrington knocking on the glass door for fourteen minutes while the internal temperature of the house was set to a comfortable seventy-two degrees. Lucas and Patricia Harrington’s phones were active inside the house during those fourteen minutes, browsing travel websites for their upcoming honeymoon in Bali."

The courtroom erupted. The judge slammed her gavel down, her face dark with fury.

Lucas buried his face in his hands. Patricia let out a soft, defeated groan, realizing their defense had just been pulverized by pure, undeniable data.

"Lucas Harrington, Patricia Harrington," the judge said, her voice dripping with absolute condemnation. "This court finds the defense’s arguments not only entirely without merit but profoundly offensive to the intelligence of this justice system. You plotted to end a life for financial gain, and you used the sacred bond of family as a weapon."
