Chapter 3 - The Cornered Beast

The next morning, the headlines were savage. “Harrington Dynasty Crumbles: Groom Arrested at Altar for Attempted Murder of Wife and Newborn.”

Public sympathy shifted entirely to me. The story of a mother surviving a snowstorm with her three-day-old infant resonated globally. Donations, supportive messages, and legal offers flooded in. But I didn't care about the fame; I cared about safety. Lucas and Patricia were locked in holding cells, denied bail due to the severe nature of the criminal charges and the flight risk posed by their offshore accounts.

However, the drama was far from over.

Vanessa Bell, realizing her dream of becoming a billionaire’s wife had turned into a prison sentence, decided to play her own hand.

I was staying at a secure hotel downtown when my phone buzzed with an unknown number. When I answered, Vanessa's voice came through, shaking and breathless, but laced with a desperate venom.

"Emma, we need to talk. Right now."

"I have nothing to say to you, Vanessa. Talk to the police," I said, preparing to hang up.

"If you hang up, you’ll never find the second set of books," Vanessa threatened sharply. "Lucas wasn't just stealing from your father’s company, Emma. He was involved with some very dangerous offshore investors. People who don't care about divorce court or child abandonment. People who want their money back. And right now, all those debts are tied to the Harrington Logistics accounts—the accounts you just seized."

My hand tightened on the receiver. "What did he do?"

"Meet me at the old warehouse on the pier in one hour," Vanessa commanded. "Come alone. If I see a single cop, I destroy the encryption keys to the offshore accounts, and those investors will come after you and your baby to collect what Lucas owes them."

Arthur Vance advised strongly against it. "It's a trap, Emma. She's desperate. She’s trying to leverage her way out of a conspiracy charge."

"I know it's a trap," I said, looking over at Lily, who was happily kicking her little feet in the crib. "But if Lucas entangled my father’s legacy with criminal elements, I need to know. I won't let a shadow hang over my daughter's future. I’m going. But I won't be unprotected."

An hour later, the heavy fog of the harbor rolled over the abandoned shipping docks. The air was freezing, reminiscent of the night Lucas had thrown me out. I walked into the dark, echoing expanse of the old warehouse, my boots crunching on broken glass.

Vanessa was waiting near a rusted shipping container, holding a laptop and a thick manila folder. She looked exhausted, her expensive bridal glow completely shattered.

"You actually came," Vanessa said, watching me closely. "Where's the baby?"

"Safe. Somewhere you and the Harringtons will never find her," I replied, keeping my distance. "Show me the books, Vanessa."

Vanessa opened the folder, revealing a series of high-value promissory notes signed by Lucas. The names on the investor lines weren't banks—they were notorious shell companies linked to international money laundering syndicates.

"Lucas owed them twelve million dollars," Vanessa explained, her voice trembling. "He promised them full control of Avalon Holdings once he got rid of you and forced you to sign the sanity waiver. That’s why he threw you out in the storm, Emma. He needed you dead or declared legally incompetent before the end of the fiscal year so he could liquidate your father's shares without your consent."

The sheer cold-blooded horror of it hit me like a physical blow. He hadn't just abandoned us out of cruelty; it was a premeditated execution plot for profit.

"And what do you want, Vanessa?" I asked, forcing my voice to remain steady.

"I want immunity," she hissed, stepping closer. "Give me the authorization to unlock the primary account, let me take two million to disappear out of the country, and I’ll give you the state's evidence to put Lucas away for life. If you don't, I walk out of here, I trigger the debt default, and those syndicates will ensure you and Lily never see the end of the month."

Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the darkness behind the shipping container.

"She’s lying, Emma. She doesn't have the encryption keys," a calm, authoritative voice echoed through the warehouse.

Vanessa whipped around, her face twisting in pure panic as a tall, sharp-eyed man stepped into the dim light. It was Christian Cole—my late father’s most trusted business protege and the brilliant corporate strategist I had called the night of the blizzard.
