Chapter 6 - The Promise Made Eternal

Saturday morning arrived under a clear, brilliant blue sky.

The small church in Albany was decorated with white roses and soft satin ribbons for Emma’s wedding. The pews were filled with local family, friends, and townspeople who had spent the last twenty-four hours gossiping about the arrival of the mysterious, handsome billionaire who had swept Sophia Carter off her feet.

Sophia stood in the small bridal room at the back of the church, helping Emma adjust her veil.

"You look beautiful, Emma," Sophia said, smiling warmly at her younger sister.

Emma turned around, grabbing Sophia’s hands, her eyes filled with tears. "I’m sorry, Sophia. I’m so sorry for what Tim said last night. I was so blind. I didn't see how much you were hurting down in the city... and I didn't see how much that man adores you."

Sophia smiled, pressing her hand against her left finger, where the diamond sparkled warmly. "He’s a good man, Emma. The best man I’ve ever known."

The church doors opened, and the organ began to play its slow, joyous melody.

Sophia walked down the aisle first as the maid of honor, holding a small bouquet of white lilies.

As she stepped into the sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows, her eyes immediately locked onto the front pew.

Sitting there, right beside her mother’s wheelchair, was Dominic. He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, looking impeccably handsome, his eyes fixed entirely on Sophia as she walked toward him. On his lap sat Lily, dressed in a tiny white lace flower-girl dress, waving her small hand frantically at her mother.

When Sophia reached the front, Dominic stood up.

He didn't look at the altar. He didn't look at the priest. He looked at Sophia, reaching out to take her bouquet so she could adjust her sister’s dress, his hand brushing hers with a warmth that sent a thrilling shiver straight through her core.

The ceremony was beautiful, short, and sweet.

When Emma and Tim were finally pronounced husband and wife, the small church erupted into applause.

After the service, the guests gathered on the sunny front lawn of the church for photos and champagne. Mrs. Carter sat in her wheelchair under the shade of a large oak tree, looking healthier and happier than she had in years, surrounded by her daughters and her grandchild.

Dominic walked over to Mrs. Carter, holding a glass of sparkling water for her.

"Thank you, Dominic," Mrs. Carter whispered, grabbing his sleeve, her eyes shining with deep emotion. "You gave an old woman her peace."

Dominic knelt beside her wheelchair, looking up at her with profound respect. "You don't need to thank me, Mrs. Carter. Sophia gave me a reason to live."

Sophia stepped up beside them, holding Lily in her arms.

Dominic stood up, taking Lily from Sophia’s arms, pulling both of them close to his side under the warm afternoon sun.

"So," Sophia murmured, looking up at him with a soft, playful smile. "The wedding is over. The fake story worked. When do we go back to New York, boss?"

Dominic looked down at her, his dark eyes sparkling with an intense, unwavering devotion that made her breath catch.

"We go back tomorrow," Dominic said softly. "But we aren't going back to the basement."

Sophia blinked. "What?"

Dominic reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a small leather document folder. He handed it to her.

Sophia opened it with trembling fingers.

Inside was a legal deed to a stunning, light-filled brownstone apartment overlooking Central Park—registered entirely in the name of Sophia Carter and Lily Carter. Attached to the back was a secondary document: an official enrollment acceptance for Lily at the prestigious Manhattan Academy, fully paid through high school.

"Dominic..." Sophia breathed, her eyes wide with shock and tears. "This... this is too much..."

"It’s just the beginning," Dominic corrected softly, taking the folder from her hands and tossing it onto the table behind them. He grabbed her left hand, lifting her fingers to his lips, kissing the diamond ring he had placed there two days ago.

"The lie is over, Sophia," Dominic whispered against her knuckles, his voice ringing with pure, absolute truth. "On Monday morning, we go to the city clerk’s office. I want this ring to be real. I want your name next to mine. I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you and Lily never know cold, fear, or loneliness ever again."

Lily wrapped her small arms around Dominic’s neck, giggling happily. "Are you our real daddy now, Mr. Prince?"

Dominic looked down at the tiny girl, his harsh, dark face breaking into a wide, radiant smile that warmed the entire lawn. He pressed a kiss against Lily’s cheek.

"I am whatever you and your mommy want me to be, little one," Dominic promised softly.

Sophia wrapped her arms around Dominic’s waist, burying her face against his chest, listening to the strong, steady thud of the heart that belonged entirely to her.

The maid who had walked through the marble doors four years ago in silence had found her home. And the mafia boss who had lived in shadows had finally found his light—guided by a crayon drawing, a button-eyed rabbit, and the love of a woman who had taught him how to live.
