Chapter 5 - The Midnight Confession

By midnight, the Carter house was quiet.

Emma and Tim had left for their hotel. Aunt Clara and Uncle Bob had retired to the guest room. Mrs. Carter was sleeping peacefully in her bedroom, her breathing steady and deep, her face carrying a look of profound relief she hadn't possessed in years.

Sophia stepped out onto the small back porch, carrying a cup of hot tea.

The cool night air swept over her face, chilling her warm skin. She had changed out of her silk dress into a soft wool sweater and jeans, but her hand still felt heavy with the diamond ring.

Standing at the edge of the dark lawn, his suit jacket off, his white shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows, was Dominic. A thin ribbon of smoke rose from the cigar held between his fingers, glowing red in the dark.

Sophia walked quietly across the wooden deck, her steps soft. "Lily is fast asleep. She refused to go to bed until she put Mr. Whiskers under your coat."

A faint, low chuckle escaped Dominic’s chest. "She’s a persistent little boss."

Sophia stood beside him at the railing, looking out into the dark trees of the backyard. "You didn't have to say those things at dinner, Dominic."

"Everything I said at dinner was true," he replied calmly, taking a slow drag from his cigar.

"Dominic, please," Sophia whispered, looking down at her hands. "We don't have to pretend when we're alone. I know why you did this. You did it to help a dying mother. You did it because Lily asked you. And I am more grateful to you than words can ever say. You gave my mother the greatest gift she could ever receive."

Dominic turned to look at her. The moonlight caught the silver at his temples and the deep, intense shadows of his eyes.

"Do you really think I came to Albany because a three-year-old gave me a drawing?" Dominic asked softly.

Sophia blinked, her heart jumping into her throat. "Didn't you?"

Dominic flicked the ash from his cigar into the darkness. He turned his body toward her, leaning his hip against the porch railing, closing the distance between them until his shadow enveloped her entirely.

"Sophia," he said, his voice dropping into a low, rough rumble. "Four years ago, a woman applied for a cleaning job at my estate. My security chief brought me her file. A young mother, abandoned by her partner, broke, living in a shelter with a newborn baby. He told me she was a security risk. He told me to reject her."

Sophia stared at him, her eyes wide with shock. "You... you saw my file?"

"I saw your picture," Dominic corrected softly. "I saw a young woman with fierce, terrified eyes who refused to give up. I ordered Richard to hire you immediately. I ordered him to give you the basement suite—the only room with an independent heating line and a private exit. I ordered Mrs. Gable to leave extra food in the pantry every night."

Sophia felt the ground tilt beneath her feet. "You... you did that?"

"I watched you every day, Sophia," Dominic confessed, stepping closer, his large hand coming up to gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone. "I watched you walk through my halls with your head held high. I watched you care for my house with more pride than the people who owned it. I stayed late in my study just to hear your footsteps in the hallway. I stood at my window every morning just to watch you walk Lily to the park."

Sophia’s breath hit her throat like a wave of pure electricity. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked up into his dark, tortured face.

"Why didn't you say anything?" she sobbed softly. "For four years... you barely spoke a word to me!"

"Because I am a dangerous man, Sophia!" Dominic rasped, his eyes burning with an intense, agonizing pain. "Look at my life! I live in a world of violence, blood, and shadows! Men want to kill me! Rivals want to burn my empire down! How could I pull a sweet, innocent woman like you into my darkness? How could I put a target on your back and on your daughter's head?"

He pressed his forehead against hers, his breath hot and fast against her lips.

"I tried to stay away," Dominic whispered, his fingers digging gently into her hair. "I swore I would just protect you from afar, give you a safe place to work, and keep you clean from my world. But when your little girl walked up to me yesterday... when she held up that drawing and told me her mommy was crying in the dark... my soul broke."

"Dominic..." she gasped, her hands coming up to clutch his white shirt, feeling the frantic, violent beating of his heart beneath her palms.

"I can't pretend anymore, Sophia," Dominic confessed, his voice breaking with raw, unshielded emotion. "I don't want to be your fake fiancé. I don't want to be your employer. I want to be the man who wakes up beside you every morning. I want to be the father who raises Lily. I want to give you the world, if you'll let me."

Sophia looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had built a quiet sanctuary for her without ever asking for credit, the man who had protected her pride, comforted her mother, and loved her daughter before she even knew his heart.

"You don't have to give me the world, Dominic," Sophia whispered, tears of pure, overwhelming joy streaming down her face. "You already gave me everything I ever prayed for."

She pulled his face down to hers.

This time, the kiss was not an act for her family. It was real, passionate, and devastatingly deep. Dominic let out a low, primal groan, his arms sweeping around her waist, lifting her off her feet, pressing her against his chest as if he would never let her go.

The dark clouds of fear, shame, and isolation that had covered Sophia’s life for four years dissolved into the cool midnight air, replaced by the warm, absolute promise of a man who would burn the world down before he let her suffer again.
