Chapter 4 - The Night of the Red Docks

At 4:00 a.m., heavy fog rolled off the Atlantic Ocean, blanketing the commercial docks of Pier 42 in a thick, gray haze.
The harbor was silent except for the low groan of metal shipping containers shifting in the tide and the rhythmic lap of icy water against the wooden pilings.
Inside Warehouse 9—a massive, cavernous building used by the Cross syndicate for high-value smuggling—Julian Cross stood beside a silver Mercedes SUV, nervously checking his Rolex watch.
Julian was thirty-eight, a sleek, arrogant man who wore three-piece Italian suits and preferred grand conspiracies to actual street warfare. Beside him stood six heavily armed mercenaries carrying tactical carbines, along with Dr. Victor Aris, who was clutching a leather briefcase packed with three million dollars in laundered bearer bonds.
"Where the hell is she?" Julian muttered, pacing back and forth across the oil-stained concrete floor. "Isabella was supposed to be at the airstrip an hour ago!"
"She's not answering her encrypted line, Julian," Dr. Aris said, wiping sweat from his balding forehead despite the freezing dampness of the warehouse. "I told you this plan was too risky! Throwing the child into the mansion's internal waste chute? If Marcus found out—"
"Marcus didn't find out!" Julian snapped, rounding on the doctor. "Isabella had full control of the mansion security! The baby was supposed to drop into the waste compactor, be picked up by our contact in the private sanitation truck at 10:00 p.m., and disposed of at sea! It was fool-proof!"
"Then why isn't she here?!" Aris cried out, his voice cracking with panic.
Suddenly, the massive steel roll-up doors at the front of the warehouse didn't just open—they were violently blown off their tracks by a twin breaching charge.
BOOM!
Shockwaves blasted through the cavernous space, shattering the overhead lights into a shower of sparks and blinding dust. Before the echoes of the explosion could fade, four black armored tactical trucks smashed through the burning wreckage of the doors, their high-beam floodlights pinning Julian and his men in glaring, blinding white light.
"AMBUSH!" Julian screamed, drawing his nickel-plated pistol. "FIRE!"
The mercenaries raised their weapons, but before they could squeeze a single trigger, the side doors of the armored trucks slid open.
A hail of suppressed, fully automatic gunfire cut through the damp air with terrifying precision. The six mercenaries collapsed onto the concrete floor in seconds, their weapons clattering uselessly against the ground.
Dr. Aris dropped his briefcase, falling to his knees with his hands stretched high above his head, weeping hysterically. "DON'T SHOOT! PLEASE! I'M JUST THE DOCTOR!"
Through the swirling smoke and glaring headlights walked a single figure.
Marcus Falcone wore a long dark trench coat over a black tactical vest. In his right hand, he held a heavy, custom-made combat shotgun, its barrel still smoking. Behind him marched thirty of the Falcone family’s most ruthless enforcers, led by Dario Vance.
Julian backed up against the side of his Mercedes, his gun hand shaking so badly he could barely keep it pointed at Marcus.
"M-Marcus..." Julian stammered, his aristocratic arrogance evaporating into raw terror. "Listen to me... this is a misunderstanding! I didn't know—"
"You didn't know?" Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stopped ten feet away. "You paid Dr. Aris two million dollars to steal my son from his dying mother's arms. You instructed your sister to murder an infant."
"It was Isabella’s idea!" Julian shrieked, pointing a accusing finger at nothing. "She wanted the Falcone empire! She said if Elena died and the baby was gone, you would marry her and merge our territories! She forced me to help her!"
Dr. Aris looked up from the floor, gasping. "HE'S LYING! Julian promised me ten million to falsify the death certificate! He planned to use the baby as leverage to blackmail you later if Isabella failed!"
Marcus looked between the two pathetic, trembling men.
"Dario," Marcus said quietly.
"Yes, Don Marcus?"
"Take Dr. Aris to the state medical board investigators. Give them the full paper trail, the wire transfers, and the yellow mortuary receipts. Let him spend the rest of his miserable life in a federal penitentiary."
"No! Please! Not federal prison!" Aris wept as two guards dragged him away into the darkness.
Marcus then shifted his gaze back to Julian Cross.
"And me?" Julian whispered, sweat pouring down his pale face. "What about me, Marcus? Our fathers were brothers in arms! Don Lorenzo stood by you!"
"Don Lorenzo was a righteous man," Marcus said, raising the heavy combat shotgun until the dark steel barrel was aimed directly at Julian’s chest. "You are a disgrace to his name. You brought dishonor to your bloodline, and you tried to extinguish mine."
"Marcus, please—!"
RACK.
The sound of the shotgun chambering a fresh slug echoed through the silent warehouse.

"The Cross family business ends tonight," Marcus said softly.
A second later, a single shot rang out into the fog, signaling the absolute end of the conspiracy that had threatened the Falcone empire.
