Chapter 3 - The Spider's Web

Isabella looked at the yellow card in Marcus's hand, and for the first time, every ounce of color left her lips. Her aristocratic poise collapsed, replaced by the raw, animalistic panic of a trapped predator.

"Marcus... listen to me..." she stuttered, taking a step backward until her spine hit the hard wood of the doorframe. "It wasn't... it wasn't what you think!"

"You tried to murder my son," Marcus said, stepping around the desk. Each step was slow, deliberate, heavy with death. "My wife’s final breath was spent asking if our child was safe. And you paid a doctor to stuff him into a dumpster."

"I DID IT FOR US!" Isabella suddenly screamed, her voice cracking with wild madness. "I DID IT FOR YOU!"

The room went dead quiet. Even the guards stared at her in shock.

"For us?" Marcus repeated softly, stopping two feet away from her.

"Elena was weak!" Isabella spat out, tears of rage brimming in her eyes. "She was sickly, useless! She couldn't give you a strong dynasty! For three years I managed your life, Marcus! I laid in your bed when she was too fragile to touch! I ran your household! I was supposed to be the mother of the next Falcone Don!"

She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at the sleeping baby.

"If that child lived, Elena’s memory would reign over this house forever! You would look at him and see her! You would never marry me! You would never make me your queen! That child was a ghost—a ghost that stood between me and everything I deserved!"

Marcus looked at her not with anger, but with a terrifying, absolute disgust.

"You are nothing," Marcus said quietly. "You were never going to be my queen. You were a convenience. A placeholder."

The words hit Isabella like a physical blow. She staggered back.

"Dario," Marcus commanded.

"Sir?"

"Take her down to the sub-basement vaults. Put her in cell four."

Isabella’s eyes went wide with terror. The sub-basement vaults of the Falcone estate were infamous throughout the eastern seaboard mafia network. Men went down into those concrete rooms and were never seen again.

"No! Marcus, please! Don Lorenzo was your mentor! My father—"

"Your father was a man of honor," Marcus cut her off. "You are a monster. Be thankful I don't let the dogs tear you apart tonight."

The two heavy security guards grabbed Isabella by her arms, lifting her off her feet as she began to kick and scream wildly.

"MARCUS! YOU CAN'T DO THIS! DR. ARIS IS ALREADY ON A PLANE! MY BROTHER KNOWS EVERYTHING! THE CROSS FAMILY WILL TEAR THIS HOUSE DOWN!" her screams echoed down the long hallway, fading into muffled shrieks as the heavy iron doors of the basement chute slammed shut.

In the study, Marisol held little Lucia tightly against her chest, both of them trembling from the raw violence of the confrontation.

Marcus turned around, taking a deep breath to regain his composure. He walked over to the desk, pulled open a drawer, and brought out a leather-bound checkbook and a set of keys.

He walked over to Marisol and Lucia.

"Marisol," Marcus said.

"P-Please, Don Marcus," Marisol whimpered, bowing her head. "We didn't mean to cause trouble—"

"Look at me," Marcus ordered softly.

Marisol slowly raised her eyes.

Marcus held out the keys and a piece of paper he had just signed. "This is the deed to the stone cottage on the east end of the estate property. It has four bedrooms, a garden, and a private security gate. It is yours."

Marisol gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Don Marcus... we... we can't accept that—"

"And this," Marcus continued, handing her a check written out for five hundred thousand dollars, "is a trust fund established tonight for Lucia's education. Any school she wants to attend in the world, tuition is covered."

Lucia looked at the check, then up at Marcus's dark, stern face. "Are you going to keep the baby safe now, Mr. Marcus?"

Marcus looked at the little girl, a genuine, rare smile breaking across his hard face. "Yes, Lucia. Thanks to you, no one will ever hurt him again. What do you think his name should be?"

Lucia thought for a moment, her brow furrowing in deep concentration. "My grandmother told me that children born in the storm are called Leo. Like a lion."

Marcus looked down at the baby, who opened his gray eyes and gave a tiny, soft sigh.

"Leo," Marcus repeated, the name fitting perfectly on his tongue. "Leo Falcone."

He looked back at Dario. "Dario."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Isabella said her brother, Julian Cross, knows about this?"

"Julian took over the Cross family operations after Don Lorenzo died," Dario confirmed grimly. "He controls the docks and the transport networks in the north. If Isabella was working with him, then this isn't just a domestic betrayal, Marcus. This is a coup."

Marcus walked over to his wall safe, punched in a eight-digit combination, and pulled out a heavy black tactical phone—the one connected directly to his frontline captains.

"Call every lieutenant," Marcus ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Tell them Don Marcus is calling in every debt. Gather the families at the docks by dawn."

"And Julian Cross?" Dario asked, his hand hovering over his gun.

Marcus’s eyes flared with cold, unyielding fire. "Julian Cross tried to kill my heir. By sunrise, the Cross family will cease to exist."
