Chapter 5 - Midnight Justice

By 11:30 PM, the grand ballroom was empty, cleared out by federal authorities and hotel staff.
Outside the St. Regis Hotel, rain continued to pour, reflection red and blue police lights against the wet asphalt. A crowd of reporters had gathered behind the barricades, cameras flashing incessantly as the story of the decade broke across every major news network.
Evelyn Ashford was led out through the front doors in steel handcuffs.
Her silver hair was disheveled, her velvet gown stained, her head bowed to avoid the blinding camera flashes. As the marshals guided her toward the back of the armored police van, she stopped and turned her head one last time.
I stood under the hotel awning, holding Lena close against my side, with Grace tucked warmly inside my wool coat.
Evelyn looked at us—at the family she had tried to erase, now standing united and unbroken.
"Daniel..." she whispered, her voice cracking under the roar of the rain. "Please..."
I didn't answer. I simply held my wife and daughter closer, watching silently as the marshal pushed Evelyn into the back seat and slammed the heavy metal doors shut.
The van pulled away, its sirens blaring, disappearing into the dark, rainy midnight sky.
Marcus Vance stepped up beside me, handing me a quiet tablet. "Mercer’s confession is rock solid, Daniel. The guards at the farm are already talking to avoid federal conspiracy charges. She will never see the outside of a federal penitentiary for the rest of her life."
"And the board?" I asked.
May you like
"The board held an emergency session ten minutes ago," Marcus smiled gently. "They voted unanimously to install you as Chief Executive Officer, with Lena as the official Trustee of the Ashford Estate. The company is safe."
I handed the tablet back to Marcus. "Thank you, Marcus. For everything."
