Chapter 1 - The Trap is Set

The penthouse was quiet save for the soft sound of Grace’s breathing. Lena sat on the edge of the plush velvet sofa, staring at the warm mug of tea I had placed in her hands as if it were a hallucination.

"Daniel," she whispered, her eyes wide with terror. "You don't understand what she's capable of. Evelyn didn't just lock me away—she built an entire network. Dr. Mercer, the farm guards, even the local sheriff who patrolled the district. If she senses for one second that you know—"

"She won't," I said, kneeling in front of her and gently placing my hands over hers. For the first time in two years, the cold, hollow ache in my chest was replaced by an intense, burning clarity. "Lena, look at me. I haven't spent the last twenty-four months crying in the dark. I spent them tracking every dollar my mother moved out of Ashford Holdings."

I pulled out my secure phone and opened an encrypted dashboard.

"When the police found that burned car two years ago, the dental records didn't make sense to me," I explained quietly. "Mercer signed off on them within three hours—unheard of for a rural county coroner. I knew my mother hated you because my father’s will named you as the primary trustee if I died, bypassing her completely. But I couldn't move until I had proof she hadn't actually killed you."

Lena’s breath hitched. "You... you knew I might be alive?"

"I prayed you were," I said softly, reaching up to gently trace the fading bruise on her cheek. "I hired Marcus Vance—ex-Federal Intelligence. For eighteen months, his team has been auditing every off-grid property Evelyn purchased under shell corporations. Three days ago, they flagged an isolated compound in Blackwood County. I was on my way there tonight when you walked up to my hotel."

"I escaped during a storm," Lena said, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "A tree smashed the perimeter fence, and the power went out. I ran through five miles of forest carrying Grace... I didn't know where to go until I saw your face on a billboard for the Ashford Board Dinner."

A soft chime sounded from my phone. It was a message from Marcus: Phase Two initiated. Federal warrants secured. Local authorities bypassed.

I stood up, adjusting my tuxedo jacket in the mirror. I looked like the grieving, submissive son Evelyn believed she had broken.

"Stay here," I told Lena, handing her a keycard and a satellite phone. "The room is registered under a shell company. Marcus’s private security detail is already outside the door. No one enters except him."

I leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to Lena’s lips, then gently kissed sleeping Grace’s forehead.

"It’s time to go to dinner," I whispered.
