CHAPTER 4 – THE LITTLE GIRL WHO WOULDN'T WAKE UP
The black SUV raced through evening traffic.
Every traffic light ahead turned green before they reached it.
Clara noticed.
"You... called someone?"
Dominic didn't answer.
The convoy simply moved as though the entire city had stepped aside.
Caleb sat beside Clara in silence.
Every few seconds he glanced at her, making sure she was still there.
When they reached the daycare, Clara was already opening the door before the vehicle stopped.
She rushed inside.
Emma lay asleep on a small cot.
Her cheeks were bright red.
Her tiny body shivered beneath a thin blanket.
"Mommy..."
The weak voice nearly shattered Clara.
She gathered her daughter into her arms.
"I'm here."
"I'm so sorry."
The teacher approached.
"Her fever climbed very quickly. We were about to call an ambulance."
Dominic entered a moment later.
The room fell silent.
The staff instantly recognized him.
One teacher nearly dropped her clipboard.
Dominic ignored the attention.
He looked only at Emma.
"She needs a hospital."
"I can't afford—"
"You won't be paying."
Clara's jaw tightened.
"I said I don't want charity."
Dominic answered calmly.
"I owe you."
"You fed my son when everyone else walked away."
"This debt is mine."
Before Clara could argue, Emma suddenly began struggling to breathe.
Her little chest rose too fast.
Then slower.
Then...
Too slow.
"Emma?"
Clara's voice shook.
"Emma!"
The little girl's eyes rolled back.
The teacher gasped.
Dominic reacted instantly.
"Move."
He lifted Emma with surprising gentleness.
"Driver!"
The bodyguards burst into motion.
Within seconds the convoy was racing toward Moretti Medical Center, the city's most advanced private hospital.
Inside the emergency room, doctors surrounded Emma.
Clara tried to follow.
A nurse blocked her.
"You have to wait."
"No!"
"My daughter!"
Dominic stepped beside her.
"They'll save her."
His confidence sounded absolute.
Until the emergency physician emerged ten minutes later.
His expression was grim.
"Mr. Moretti..."
Dominic frowned.
"Speak."
"We've stabilized the child."
"But..."
"But what?"
The doctor hesitated.
"Her blood work shows signs of a rare genetic immune disorder."
Clara felt the floor disappear beneath her.
"I don't understand."
The doctor looked at her gently.
"Mrs. Vale..."
"Without immediate treatment..."
He paused.
"...your daughter may have only weeks to live."
The hallway became perfectly silent.
Clara stared blankly.
Then her knees gave out.
Dominic caught her before she hit the floor.
As she buried her face against his shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably, neither of them noticed the elderly hospital director standing at the end of the corridor.
The old man had frozen after reading Emma's laboratory results.
His hands trembled.
He looked again at the little girl's surname.
Vale.
Then he whispered to himself in horror,
"No..."
"It can't be..."
"She's one of them."

And somewhere deep beneath the hospital, inside a restricted research archive that had been sealed for nearly twenty years...
A forgotten file bearing the name VALE was quietly pulled from a locked cabinet
