Chapter 4 - THE THUNDER IN THE STORM

The black SUV tore through the midnight rain of South Brooklyn at ninety miles an hour, its sirens blaring red and blue against the wet asphalt.

Inside the back seat, Alexander sat like a monster unleashed.

His eyes were jet black with unadulterated fury, his hands gripping a heavy tactical firearm as his security chief, Marcus, coordinated four tactical units through the satellite radio.

"We tracked the GPS signal on her vehicle to an abandoned ship repair facility at Dock 42," Marcus reported quickly from the front seat. "Richard Vance is there himself. He has eight private security contractors with him."

"If a single hair on my mother's head is harmed," Alexander growled, his voice vibrating with lethal power, "I will burn that entire dock into the Atlantic Ocean."

I sat beside Alexander, my hands clutched tightly in my lap, tears stinging my eyes. "She must be terrified, Alexander. Without her hearing... in the dark... surrounded by strangers..."

Alexander turned his head toward me. He reached out, taking my shaking hand into his massive grip, squeezing it tight.

"She has you, Emily," Alexander said softly, his voice steadying. "And she knows I am coming."

Ten minutes later, the SUV slammed to a halt in the shadows behind a sprawling, rusted steel warehouse on the edge of the dark harbor. Rain poured down in heavy sheets, the sound of crashing waves echoing against the wooden piers.

"Stay in the vehicle, Emily," Marcus warned, drawing his weapon.

"No," I declared firmly, opening my door. "I'm coming."

"Emily, it's dangerous—" Alexander began.

"She can't hear them, Alexander!" I yelled over the sound of the rain. "If Richard tries to force her to sign something or threatens her, she needs someone who can tell her what's happening! I am not staying in this car!"

Alexander stared at me for two agonizing seconds. A look of fierce pride flashed through his eyes.

"Keep behind me," he ordered coldly, pulling a secondary pistol from his holster and clicking off the safety. "Always."

We moved through the side door of the warehouse like shadows.

The interior of Dock 42 was massive, smelling of rust, engine oil, and salt water. High overhead, yellow industrial floodlights illuminated a central clearing surrounded by shipping crates and rusted boat hulls.

Tied to a heavy wooden chair in the middle of the floodlights was Helena.

Her hair was slightly disheveled, but her posture was straight, her chin lifted high in absolute defiance. Standing beside her was Richard Vance, holding a thick leather portfolio and a pen, surrounded by six armed men in black tactical gear.

"Sign the transfer, Helena!" Richard shouted angrily, pointing at the paper. "It's over! Alexander's empire is mine!"

Helena stared straight ahead, completely ignoring him, her face a mask of stone. She couldn't hear his screams, and she refused to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.

"You deaf old fool!" Richard yelled, raising his hand as if to slap her face.

BOOM!

A thunderous gunshot echoed through the warehouse as the floodlight directly above Richard’s head shattered into a rain of golden sparks.

Richard screamed in shock, dropping the folder as his men immediately raised their weapons, scanning the dark rafters.

Out from the shadows of the shipping crates walked Alexander Kingston.

He moved with absolute, terrifying calm, his rifle resting low at his hip, his eyes fixed on Richard Vance like a predator locked onto its prey. Behind him, Marcus and four tactical officers moved into flanking positions, their red laser sights painting the chests of Richard’s mercenaries.

"Set the pen down, Richard," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Or the next bullet goes through your knee."

Richard stumbled backward, hiding behind his armed guards. "Kingston! You're too late! I have the legal affidavits!"

"You have a kidnappings charge and federal treason, Richard," Alexander replied coldly, taking three long steps forward.

While Alexander kept Richard’s attention, I crept quietly around the shadow of a rusted boat hull on the left side of the floor, keeping low behind the wooden crates.

I reached the perimeter of the light, twenty feet from Helena’s chair.

I caught her eye through the gloom.

Helena’s dark eyes widened slightly, but she didn't move her head or alert the guards.

I lifted my hands into the soft beam of a side lantern, signing as fast as my fingers could move: Are you hurt?

Helena subtly shook her head, her hands moving low against her lap where her wrists were bound with zip-ties: I am fine. The man on the left has a knife in his belt.

I translated her signal instantly, calling out to Marcus in a loud, clear voice: "Left guard! He has a secondary knife!"

Marcus reacted in a fraction of a second, firing a suppressed round that struck the left guard's weapon, disarming him instantly.

Chaos erupted.

Richard’s mercenaries opened fire, but Alexander’s tactical team was faster, more precise, and utterly ruthless. Heavy gunfire roared through the warehouse as glass, sparks, and metal fragments rained down.

I didn't think. I sprinted across the open concrete floor straight toward Helena’s chair.

A mercenary stepped into my path, raising his pistol toward me—

BANG!

Alexander’s rifle barked behind me, dropping the guard instantly before he could pull the trigger.

"Go, Emily! Get her!" Alexander roared over the gunfire, advancing through the smoke like a dark god of war, taking down two more attackers with terrifying precision.

I reached Helena, pulling a small pocket knife from my jacket and slicing through the zip-ties on her wrists.

"Come on!" I signed urgently, pulling her to her feet.

We ducked behind a heavy iron beam just as Richard Vance scrambled out from behind the crates, holding a small snub-nosed revolver with shaking hands.

His eyes were wild, bloodshot, completely insane with panic.

"You ruined everything!" Richard screamed, pointing his gun directly at me. "You and your damn sign language!"

He pulled the trigger—
