Chapter 4 - THE SHADOWS OF MANHATTAN

Three weeks passed like a whirlwind.
My life had completely transformed. The cramped studio apartment in Queens and the greasy apron at Belladonna were replaced by a light-filled suite at the Kingston Estate in Long Island.
Officially, my title was Executive Cultural Liaison. Unofficially, I had become the heart of the Kingston household.
Every morning, Helena and I sat in the sunroom, drinking tea while I taught her advanced ASL idioms and she shared stories about her world travels. And every evening at exactly seven o'clock, Alexander returned from the office.
He no longer skipped dinners. He no longer brought his phone to the table.
Instead, the man who used to rule Manhattan with an iron fist sat at the head of the dining table, practicing his signs with a quiet, fierce determination.
"How was your day?" Alexander signed slowly, his large hands carefully forming the words.
Helena smiled warmly from across the table, signing back: Much better now that you are home. Emily took me to the botanical gardens.
Alexander turned his gaze to me. In the warm glow of the dining room chandelier, his sharp features looked softer, his eyes holding a quiet tenderness whenever he looked my way.
"Did you enjoy the gardens, Emily?" he asked out loud, his voice deep and smooth.
"It was lovely," I smiled, setting my napkin down. "Helena loved the glasshouse orchids."
"Thank you," Alexander said softly. "For everything you do for her. And for me."
"It doesn't feel like work, Alexander," I said honestly. "I miss my brother every day, but being here... helping Helena communicate... it feels like Noah is guiding me."
Alexander looked at me for a long moment, a subtle shift in his expression—a mixture of deep respect and something much warmer, something that sent butterflies fluttering through my stomach whenever our eyes met.
After dinner, Helena retired to her room to read. I walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the dark, sprawling gardens, pulling my cardigan tight against the cool autumn breeze.
The heavy glass door slid open behind me.
Alexander stepped out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of warm cider. He handed one to me, his fingers briefly brushing against mine. The contact sent a tiny electric shiver down my spine.
"You should be wearing a heavier coat," Alexander remarked playfully, echoing the words his mother had used the night we met.
I chuckled softly, taking a sip of the sweet cider. "I seem to recall a certain billionaire getting scolded for the exact same thing."
Alexander smiled—a rare, breathtaking expression that transformed his rugged face. He leaned against the stone balustrade beside me, looking out at the dark horizon.
"Richard Vance hasn't given up, Emily," Alexander said quietly, the smile fading from his eyes. "His lawyers filed an injunction yesterday trying to block the corporate restructuring."
My smile fell. "Is Helena in danger of losing her shares?"
"No," Alexander said firmly, turning to look at me. "I won't let him touch her. But Richard is desperate. When men like him lose their power, they become unpredictable."
He stepped closer to me, closing the distance between us until I could smell the cedarwood scent of his cologne.
"My head of security ran a background check on you three weeks ago," Alexander admitted softly.
I stiffened slightly. "And?"
"And I learned that you worked three jobs to pay for your brother's medical care," Alexander murmured, his voice laced with profound emotion. "I learned that you gave up your college scholarship to take care of your family. I learned that you are the most selfless, brave woman I have ever met."
My breath hitched. I looked up into his hazel eyes, searching his face. "Alexander..."
"I spent four years surrounding myself with stone walls because I couldn't fix my mother's silence," he whispered, reaching out to gently cup my cheek with his warm palm. "And then a shy waitress with dirt on her shoes walked into my restaurant and broke down every wall in thirty seconds."
My heart pounded so hard against my ribs I thought he could hear it. "Alexander... I'm just an ordinary girl."
"There is nothing ordinary about you, Emily Carter," he murmured, his thumb lightly stroking my cheekbone. "You are the light in this house."
He bent his head down slowly, his eyes dropping to my lips. My heart soared, my eyes fluttering shut as I felt his warm breath against my skin—
BRRRRING! BRRRRING!
Alexander’s satellite phone erupted in his pocket with a harsh, blaring ring, shattering the quiet moment.
He pulled back reluctantly, a dark curse escaping his lips as he looked at the screen.
"Marcus," Alexander answered sharply. "What is it?"
I watched his face instantly drain of all color. His eyes widened with horror, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles twitched under his skin.
"Where?" Alexander growled into the phone. "How long ago?!"
He ended the call, looking at me with absolute panic in his eyes.

"Alexander? What happened?!" I gasped.
"It's Helena," Alexander said, his voice shaking with raw terror. "Her car was intercepted on the way back from her charity gala in Brooklyn. Richard’s men took her."
