Chapter 6 - The Coat and the Crown

Six months later.
Late August brought golden, warm sunlight to Lincoln Park. The snow was a distant memory, replaced by blooming red roses, lush green lawns, and the sweet smell of flowering jasmine drifting off Lake Michigan.
The grand courtyard of the Vance mansion had been transformed into an enchanting outdoor sanctuary. White silk canopies floated gently in the summer breeze, framed by arrangements of white lilies and golden ribbons.
Two hundred guests filled the elegant white chairs—not just syndicate captains and business executives, but local politicians, neighborhood business owners, and Sal from the diner, who was wearing a brand-new suit bought specifically for the occasion, looking bewildered yet profoundly proud.
Standing near the marble altar under an archway of white roses was Ethan Vance.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking impeccably handsome, his icy blue eyes fixed entirely on the french doors leading from the sunroom. Standing beside him as his best man was seven-year-old Leo, looking sharp and proud in his matching tuxedo.
The string quartet began to play a soft, breathtaking rendition of Canon in D.
The glass doors opened.
Little five-year-old Maya walked out first, wearing a fluffy white lace dress, dropping handfuls of pink rose petals onto the green grass, her face lit up with a brilliant, joyful smile.
And then came Sarah.
A collective gasp swept through the crowd.
Sarah was radiant. Her ivory silk wedding gown cascaded down her frame like liquid moonlight, featuring delicate lace sleeves and a long, sweeping train that glided across the grass. Her brown hair was styled in soft, elegant waves adorned with tiny pearls, and her hazel eyes shone with a deep, radiant happiness that illuminated the entire courtyard.
Ethan watched her walk toward him, his breath catching in his throat, his chest swelling with an emotion so powerful it threatened to undo his legendary composure.
When Sarah reached the altar, Ethan stepped forward, taking her soft, warm hand into his broad palm.
"You are breathtaking," Ethan whispered softly, his voice full of profound reverence.
"You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Vance," Sarah teased gently, her eyes shining with tears of joy.
The justice of the peace stepped forward, reading the classic vows of devotion, trust, and protection.
When it came time for the rings, Leo stepped up, holding out a plush black velvet box. Inside rested two simple, elegant platinum bands engraved on the interior with a tiny compass rose and a date.
Ethan picked up the ring, sliding it onto Sarah’s finger.
"Sarah," Ethan said, looking deep into her eyes, his voice steady and echoing across the quiet courtyard. "Six months ago, I was a man living in cold darkness, surrounded by walls I built to keep the world out. You walked into my life with nothing but a thin wool coat and a heart too big for this city. You froze so my children could live. You healed my family, brought light into this house, and showed me what it truly means to love."
He squeezed her hand gently.
"I give you my heart, my life, and my protection for as long as I draw breath. Where you go, I go. What is mine, is yours."
Tears trickled down Sarah’s cheeks—tears of pure, unadulterated happiness. She picked up the second platinum band, sliding it onto Ethan’s broad finger.
"Ethan," Sarah whispered softly, her voice carrying through the warm breeze. "I gave away my coat that night because I couldn't bear to see two children suffer. But in return, you gave me a home, a family, and a love I never thought I deserved. You showed me that behind the fortress wall, you are the most gentle, noble man I have ever known. I am proud to be your wife, your partner, and the mother of our children."
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the justice declared with a warm smile. "You may kiss the bride."
Ethan didn't wait. He leaned in, wrapping his strong arm around Sarah’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their lives together forever.
The entire courtyard erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and celebration.
Maya and Leo ran forward, throwing their arms around Sarah and Ethan’s legs, joining the massive family hug. Ethan picked up Maya in his right arm, wrapped his left arm around Sarah’s waist, and pulled Leo close against his side.
As the sun began to set over the waters of Lake Michigan, casting a warm, golden glow across the Lincoln Park mansion, Sarah looked at her husband and their children.

The cold alleyway, the hunger, and the fear were gone forever.
In their place remained a love forged in the coldest winter, protected by an unbreakable king, and warmed by a heart that had chosen to give everything away—and gained the entire world in return.
