Chapter 4 - The Viper in the Citadel

Life inside the Vance mansion was unlike anything Sarah had ever experienced.

Within two weeks, her world was transformed. She moved into a stunning suite on the second floor featuring French doors that opened onto a private balcony, a fireplace, and a private bathroom lined with white Carrara marble. She was given a generous clothing allowance, though she insisted on buying simple, comfortable clothes rather than luxury designer gowns.

Her primary duty was the children, and she threw herself into it with absolute devotion.

She woke Leo and Maya at seven every morning, cooked them fresh, warm breakfasts, helped Leo with his third-grade home-tutoring lessons, and spent hours in the sunroom playing games with Maya. Under Sarah's gentle, loving care, the horror of the kidnapping began to fade. The color returned to Maya's cheeks, and Leo stopped flinching every time a door closed loudly in the hallway.

Yet, living in the Vance mansion meant living in the shadow of the Chicago underworld.

Sarah quickly learned that the mansion was a fortress. Armed security guards in sharp black suits patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day. Surveillance cameras covered every square inch of the grounds, and the heavy iron gates were guarded by men who checked every delivery vehicle with bomb-sniffer dogs and mirror sweeps.

And at the center of this fortress was Ethan Vance.

He was a man of intense, disciplined habits. He worked eighteen hours a day from his private library, holding quiet, dangerous meetings with union leaders, politicians, and syndicate captains. Yet, no matter how pressing his business was, Ethan always made time for dinner at seven o'clock with Sarah and the children.

During those dinners, Sarah saw a side of Ethan that the rest of New York and Chicago feared.

He was attentive, listening with genuine interest as Maya talked about her drawings, or as Leo explained his favorite history books. And increasingly, Ethan's dark blue eyes lingered on Sarah. He listened to her opinions on art, books, and life with a quiet, profound respect that made Sarah's heart beat faster whenever their eyes met across the long mahogany dining table.

A subtle, electric tension began to grow between them—a unspoken pull that neither could deny.

However, peace in Ethan Vance's world was always an illusion.

On a cold Thursday evening in late February, Ethan was away in New York attending an emergency summit of the Five Families to finalize the peace agreement following the destruction of the Genovese breakaway faction.

The mansion was quiet. Outside, a light freezing rain was falling, coating the windows in slick ice.

Sarah had just tucked Maya into bed and was walking down the carpeted second-floor corridor toward the linen closet when she noticed a soft line of light glowing beneath the door of Ethan's private study.

She frowned. Ethan's study was strictly off-limits when he was out of town. Only Paulie and Ethan possessed the biometric security keys to open the heavy double doors.

Sarah walked quietly toward the study, her rubber-soled slippers making no sound on the runner rug. She pushed the door slightly. It was unlatched, resting open by half an inch.

Inside, standing before Ethan's grand mahogany desk, was a man.

It wasn't Paulie.

It was Julian Vance—Ethan's thirty-two-year-old cousin and the head of the syndicate's financial logistics wing. Julian was a tall, thin man with slicked-back blonde hair, sharp features, and a permanent, condescending smirk. Sarah had met him twice before, and every time he looked at her, his dark eyes held a slimy, arrogant dismissiveness.

Julian was holding an encrypted USB drive, plugging it into the port of Ethan's private terminal. He was rapidly typing commands into the keyboard, his face illuminated by the blue glare of the monitor.

"Come on, come on," Julian muttered under his breath, sweating despite the cool room. "Transfer the offshore accounts before the mainframe locks..."

Sarah's blood ran cold.

She knew instantly what was happening. Julian wasn't just checking numbers—he was stealing the Syndicate's encrypted shipping manifests and private ledger files. The very files that protected Ethan's empire from federal indictments and rival hits.

Sarah reached into her sweater pocket, her fingers closing around her smartphone. She quietly stepped back from the door, raising the camera lens to the gap, and took three quick, silent photos of Julian standing at the terminal with the encrypted drive plugged into the server.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her hand—a low, buzzing sound that echoed like a siren in the quiet hallway. An incoming text alert.

Julian snapped his head toward the door. "Who's there?!"

Sarah didn't think. She turned and sprinted down the hallway toward the grand staircase.

"Stop!" Julian roared.

Heavy footsteps slammed against the hardwood behind her. Sarah reached the top of the marble staircase, but Julian was faster. He lunged forward, his long fingers grabbing the fabric of Sarah's cardigan, yanking her backward with violent force.

Sarah stumbled, her phone slipping from her grip and bouncing down the marble steps.

Julian grabbed her by the throat, slamming her back against the wooden handrail of the balcony. His face was contorted in psychotic rage, his dark eyes bulging.

"You stupid, nosy little bitch!" Julian hissed, his grip tightening around her windpipe, cutting off her oxygen. "You thought you were special because Ethan bought you a nice dress? You're a worthless waitress!"

May you like

Sarah clawed at his hands, struggling for breath, her vision darkening at the edges.

"Give me the phone!" Julian growled, pressing her further over the edge of the high balcony. "Give it to me, or I swear to God I'll throw you over this railing right now!"
