Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the Estate

The sound of shattering glass and heavy boots rang out through the lower levels of the estate.

Savannah pressed herself against Julian’s chest, her body trembling violently as she held Noah tightly in her arms. The baby, startled by the sirens and gunshots, began to cry hysterically.

"Listen to me," Julian said, his hands cupping Savannah’s face. His eyes were no longer those of the soft, attentive man who had fed her baby hours ago; they were the cold, lethal eyes of a predator defending his territory. "You are going to take Noah and go down the hallway into my study. Behind the bookshelf is a reinforced panic room. The door locks from the inside with a biometric scanner. Once you are inside, you do not open it for anyone except me. Do you understand?"

"Julian, no!" Savannah cried out, clutching his arm. "They have guns! Come with us!"

"This is my house," Julian said with a dark, lethal composure. "They made the mistake of bringing violence into the place where my family sleeps. I am going to end this."

He kissed Noah gently on his forehead, then looked deeply into Savannah’s eyes. "Go. Now!"

Savannah ran down the long, marble corridor as bullets whined through the glass windows above. She reached Julian’s study, slapped her palm against the scanner beside the heavy mahogany bookshelf, and watched as the wall slid open to reveal a steel-reinforced vault. She ducked inside, pressing the lock button. The thick door sealed shut with a heavy pneumatic hiss, cutting off the deafening noise of the battle outside.

Inside the panic room, high-definition security monitors displayed the entire estate. Savannah watched the screens in breathless horror.

Dozens of heavily armed men wearing tactical gear had swarmed the compound. At the front of the invading group stood Victor Rostov—Julian’s primary rival in the city's criminal underworld, a sadistic mob boss known for his unyielding brutality. And standing right beside Rostov, looking nervous, disheveled, but desperate, was Cole.

Savannah’s blood ran cold as she stared at her ex-fiancé’s face on the monitor.

Through the security feeds, she watched Julian move like a phantom through his own home. Utilizing his knowledge of the estate's layout, he eliminated Rostov’s mercenaries one by one with terrifying precision. His security team regrouped around him, cutting down the invaders in the grand foyer.

Within fifteen minutes, the gunfire died down.

On the central monitor showing the main living room, Victor Rostov lay wounded on the marble floor, his weapon out of reach. Standing over him was Julian, uninjured, his dark suit crisp, holding a heavy pistol leveled at Rostov’s chest.

Cole was cowering behind a tipped-over sofa, his hands raised in frantic surrender.

Julian signaled his guards to secure Rostov, then turned his gaze toward Cole. He walked slowly toward the trembling man, grabbed him by the collar of his jacket, and dragged him across the blood-stained marble toward the study.

Inside the panic room, the intercom chimed. Julian’s voice came through the speaker, calm and steady. "Savannah. It is safe. Open the door."

Savannah entered the code, and the steel vault door slid open. She stepped out holding Noah, her eyes immediately falling on Cole, who was on his knees, guarded by two armed security men.

When Cole saw Savannah—wearing expensive silk clothes, radiant, safe, and holding their son—his eyes widened in absolute shock and disbelief.

"Savannah?!" Cole stammered, his voice squeaking with terror. "What... what are you doing here?! How do you know Julian Vance?!"

Savannah looked down at the man she had once loved—the man who had left her alone in the dark to starve with their child. Seeing him now, weak, pathetic, and groveling on the floor, she felt no love, no longing—only profound disgust.

"I called for help when you left us to die, Cole," Savannah said, her voice steady and laced with steel. "And unlike you, a real man answered."

Julian stepped beside Savannah, resting a heavy, protective hand on her shoulder. The contrast between the two men was blinding.

"Cole here told Victor Rostov that he could give him the layout of my security system in exchange for having his gambling debts forgiven," Julian said softly, looking down at Cole like an insect. "He brought an armed squad to my home, knowing you and his son were inside."

"I didn't know she was here! I swear!" Cole shrieked, tears and sweat streaming down his face. "Rostov told me we were just going to steal Vance's ledger! Savannah, please! Tell him to let me go! I’m Noah’s father!"

"You stopped being his father the moment you traded his formula money for a poker hand," Savannah said coldly. She turned her face away from him. "He means nothing to us, Julian."

Julian looked at his head of security. "Take Rostov and Cole to the holding cells at the docks. Lock them away until I decide their fate."

"No! Savannah! Please! Julian!" Cole screamed as the guards dragged him kicking and screaming down the corridor.

Once the room was clear, Julian turned to Savannah. His sharp eyes scanned her from head to toe. "Are you or the baby hurt?"

"We’re okay," Savannah whispered. She looked at the damage to the estate, then back at Julian. "He brought them here to kill you, didn't he?"

"He tried," Julian said, stepping closer and gently taking Noah from her arms. He cradled the infant against his broad chest, rocking him effortlessly. "But no one takes what is mine. Rostov made a fatal error tonight. He revealed his entire network trying to strike at me."

"What happens now?" Savannah asked, feeling the air grow heavy with anticipation.

"Now, I finish this war," Julian replied, his voice chillingly absolute. "Rostov’s empire falls tonight. But before I leave to settle this, I need to know one thing from you, Savannah."

He looked directly into her eyes, his steel gaze softening into something intense and deeply emotional.

"When this night is over, and the danger is gone... do you want to leave? I will give you a mansion in any city in the world, a trust fund for Noah, and complete freedom. Or... do you stay here, with me?"

Savannah felt her heart leap into her throat. In just four days, this dangerous, complex man had given her more safety, respect, and love than she had ever known in her entire life. He was a mafia boss, yes—but to her and Noah, he was a guardian angel wrapped in armor.

"Finish what you have to do," Savannah said softly, reaching up to lay her palm against his strong jawline. "We will be waiting right here for you."

May you like

Julian closed his eyes for a brief moment, leaning into her touch. When he opened them, a fierce, unbreakable fire burned within them. He handed Noah back to her, leaned in, and pressed a firm, lingering kiss against her lips—a promise signed in the dark.

"I will be back before sunrise," Julian whispered.
