CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET HER STEPMOTHER BURIED

The ballroom remained silent.

No one dared speak.

Victoria slowly stepped toward the waitress.

The young woman’s eyes were filled with tears.

But she didn't look surprised.

Almost as if she had waited years for this moment.

“What did you just say?” Victoria asked.

The waitress swallowed hard.

“Happy birthday, sister.”

A murmur spread through the guests.

Victoria’s heart pounded.

“That phrase...” she whispered.

“How do you know that phrase?”

The waitress reached into her apron pocket.

Everyone watched.

Especially Victoria’s stepmother.

The older woman's face drained of color.

The waitress slowly pulled out a small silver locket.

Victoria gasped.

She knew it instantly.

Their mother had owned two matching lockets.

One for each daughter.

After her little sister disappeared, one locket vanished too.

With trembling fingers, the waitress opened it.

Inside was a faded photograph.

Two little girls.

Holding hands.

Smiling.

Victoria felt her knees weaken.

“No...”

Tears filled her eyes.

“This isn't possible.”

“It is,” the waitress whispered.

“My name isn't Emily Carter.”

The room held its breath.

“My name is Amelia Ashford.”

Victoria's missing sister.

The guests erupted into whispers.

Some covered their mouths in shock.

Others stared at Victoria’s stepmother.

Because she looked terrified.

“She's lying!” the stepmother suddenly shouted.

“She wants money!”

But her voice shook.

And everyone noticed.

The waitress looked directly at her.

“No.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You sold me.”

The room exploded.

“What?”

Victoria turned sharply toward her stepmother.

The older woman staggered backward.

And for the first time in fifteen years...

the truth began fighting its way to the surface.
