Chapter 5 - The Wedding of the Century

Six months later.

The Cathedral of the Holy Name in downtown Chicago had never seen a security detail quite like the one deployed on a bright Saturday afternoon in May.

Two hundred armed guards in sharp charcoal suits lined the surrounding streets, ensuring absolute safety, while three hundred distinguished guests—diplomats, business tycoons, doctors from St. Agnes Hospital, and high-ranking members of the city's elite—filled the ancient wooden pews beneath the soaring vaulted ceilings.

The altar was decorated with thousands of fresh white roses, filling the grand cathedral with an intoxicating, heavenly fragrance.

At the front of the altar stood Marco Caruso.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his dark hair brushed back, a single white rose pinned to his lapel. Beside him stood Gianni, serving as his best man, looking sharply tailored and unusually proud.

The organ let out a grand, sweeping chord, and the heavy oak doors at the rear of the cathedral swung open.

The entire congregation stood up.

First down the aisle walked seven-year-old Matteo. Dressed in a mini tuxedo that matched his father's perfectly, he carried a velvet pillow bearing the wedding rings. He walked with his head held high, a confident, joyful smile on his face, waving briefly to old Renzo—the hospital guard from St. Agnes—who was sitting proudly in the second row.

And then came Sophia.

Marco’s heart stopped in his chest.

She was breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of pure white Italian lace, her long dark hair styled in soft, cascading waves beneath a long silk veil. She carried a bouquet of white lilies and roses, her hazel eyes locked onto Marco’s with an absolute, radiant love that brought tears to the eyes of half the guests in the cathedral.

She walked down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Gabriel Vance—the Chief of Surgery at St. Agnes, who had become a mentor and father figure to her over the years.

When she reached the altar, Gabriel gently placed her hand into Marco’s.

Marco took her small, gloved hand, holding it tightly, his gray eyes shining with an intense, overwhelming devotion.

"You look like an angel," Marco whispered softly.

"And you look like a very handsome Don," Sophia smiled back, her eyes glowing with pure happiness.

The Cardinal stepped forward, his voice echoing through the grand cathedral as he began the ancient, sacred ceremony.

When the time came for the vows, Marco did not read from a prepared card. He looked directly into Sophia’s eyes, his baritone voice clear, strong, and filled with unbreakable conviction.

"Sophia," Marco spoke, his words carrying to every corner of the church. "I spent four years walking through the dark, believing that love was a weakness that destroyed men. You proved to me that love is the only force strong enough to conquer death itself. You brought light back into my life, peace back into my soul, and a mother back to my son. I promise to honor you, protect you, and cherish you for every day of my life, through every storm that comes."

Sophia smiled through her tears, her voice steady and clear as she spoke her own vows.

"Marco," Sophia said softly. "I used to think my heart was built only for medicine—that I wasn't meant for a family of my own. But when I met you and Tommy, I realized that every dark road I walked in my life was leading me straight to this family. You are my shield, my home, and my greatest love. I promise to stand beside you, trust you, and love you for all eternity."

The Cardinal smiled, raising his hands over the couple. "By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined, let no man put asunder. You may kiss the bride."

Marco didn't hesitate. He pulled Sophia gently by her waist, lifting her veil, and pressed his lips against hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed their souls together forever.

The entire cathedral erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and joyous celebration.

Matteo ran up, hugging both their legs, laughing happily as Marco lifted him into his arms, holding his wife with the other, as they walked down the aisle together into the brilliant, sunlit afternoon.
