Chapter 7 - The Carlyle Sanctuary

The penthouse at the Carlyle Hotel occupied the entire top three floors of the Upper East Side landmark, offering a 360-degree view of the glittering Manhattan skyline. It was a fortress of bulletproof glass, private elevators, and soundproofed walls.
Sophie stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite, watching the rain streak across the glass while a private physician bandaged a minor scrape on her forearm.
Alessandro walked into the room, holding a crystal tumbler of whiskey. He dismissed the doctor with a single wave of his hand.
"You're safe here," Alessandro said, setting the glass down on a mahogany desk. "Vance’s men have been intercepted. Two of them are currently taking a very long, very educational boat ride out toward Montauk."
Sophie turned around, her eyes flashing with defensive fire. "You're treating this like a game, Alessandro! Those men tried to kill me!"
"No," Alessandro corrected, his voice dropping as he stepped closer to her. "They tried to steal what belongs to you—and by extension, what is about to be secured by me. Sit down, Sophie."
She didn't move. "I am not your property. I am not a bargaining chip for your war against Viktor Vance."
"You are the catalyst," Alessandro corrected bluntly. "Vance has been skimming from our joint port operations in Brooklyn for three years. Your father’s ledger proves it. With those documents, I can legally and financially obliterate Vance without firing a single shot in the streets. But to do that, I need the decryption key."
Sophie’s eyes narrowed. "The decryption key?"
"The micro-ledger is encrypted using a biometric algorithm based on your father's personal signature—and yours," Alessandro revealed, resting his hands on the back of a velvet armchair. "Only a Dubois can unlock the files."
Sophie crossed her arms. "And what do I get in return? Protection until the ink dries, and then what? Back to scrubbing plates?"
Alessandro smiled—a slow, predatory, yet strangely tender expression. "In exchange, I give you fifty percent equity in the restored shipping empire, full immunity from federal prosecutors who are already investigating Vance's network, and... my name."
Sophie blinked, taken aback. "Your name?"
May you like
"Marriage, Sophie," Alessandro said smoothly, stepping into her personal space. "In the syndicate, an alliance sealed by a wedding ring is unbreakable. No court can compel a wife to testify against her husband. No rival family can touch you without declaring war on the entire Moretti dynasty."
Sophie stared at him, looking for the manipulation, the trap, the hidden dagger. But all she saw in his dark, intense eyes was absolute, unwavering certainty.
