Chapter 3 - The Secret Vault

The subterranean cellar of L’Étoile Noir was a cavern of damp stone, heavy oak racks, and multi-million-dollar liquid assets. It smelled of wet earth, vintage cork, and ancient dust.

Sophie pushed open the heavy iron gate, her flashlight cutting through the gloom until it illuminated the private vault at the back. She didn't need the flashlight to find the vintage Alessandro had requested; her father had kept a case of the 1982 Lafite in their country home outside Bordeaux before the world came crashing down around them.

As her fingers traced the dusty glass bottle nestled in the wooden bin, a soft footfall echoed behind her on the stone floor.

Sophie spun around, her heart leaping into her throat.

Alessandro Moretti stood in the dim archway, filling the narrow passage with his imposing presence. He had left his bodyguards upstairs. He moved with the quiet, effortless grace of a man who owned the dark.

"You move like someone hiding from a ghost," Alessandro noted, stepping closer. The scent of his cologne—sandalwood, cedar, and expensive tobacco—overpowered the dampness of the cellar.

"I’m not hiding, Monsieur," Sophie said, holding the bottle tightly against her apron like a shield. "I’m working."

"That is an unconvincing lie," Alessandro murmured, stopping just two feet away from her. Up close, his eyes weren't just black; they held amber flecks that caught the faint amber glow of the wall sconces. "People who grew up speaking Parisian French do not scrub greasy pans in Midtown for minimum wage unless they are running from something—or someone."

"My past is none of your concern," Sophie said, her chin lifting defiantly.

"Everything in Manhattan becomes my concern eventually, ma petite," Alessandro replied, his voice dropping into a dangerous, hypnotic register. He reached out, his long fingers gently tapping the glass of the wine bottle she held. "Tell me, Sophie Dubois—yes, I already had my men run your social security number while you were down here—how does a former graduate of the Sorbonne, daughter of Ambassador Henri Dubois, end up dodging rent payments in a Hell's Kitchen walk-up?"

Sophie froze. The blood rushed in her ears.

"You investigated me?"

"In my position, trust is a myth and verification is a religion," Alessandro said calmly. "Your father lost everything in the 2018 financial scandal before he allegedly took his own life in a Swiss jail cell. The family assets were seized by international courts. But he didn't leave you penniless, did he, Sophie? He left something behind. Something valuable. Something men like me would kill to find."

Sophie’s eyes widened. The air in the cellar suddenly felt suffocating.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she whispered.

Alessandro leaned down, his lips brushing dangerously close to her ear. "Find it before my rivals do, Sophie. Because right now, you are playing a very dangerous game with a board that has already been rigged."
