Chapter 5 - The Mirror of the Past

The confession hung in the crisp morning air like heavy smoke.

For seven years, Connor had watched me break into tears in doctor's offices. He had watched me undergo invasive procedures, take hormone injections that made my body ache, and spent countless nights crying into my pillow while whispering apologies to him for not being able to give him a child.

And through all of it, he had maintained his arrogant posture, letting me shoulder one hundred percent of the blame, using my silent grief as leverage to control me.

"I know," I said quietly.

Connor froze, his sobs cutting off instantly. He blinked up at me through his swollen eyes. "What... what do you mean, you know?"

"I found out six months ago, Connor," I revealed, my voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of malice. "When I was organizing my father’s medical estate, I ran a full genomic sequence on my own profile out of curiosity. The results showed zero underlying fertility issues on my end. I called our old clinic and requested the secondary blind samples they had stored from our IVF cycles five years ago."

Connor’s breath caught in his throat. "You... you knew before we ran into each other at the hospital?"

"Yes," I nodded. "I knew that you were infertile. I knew that little boy couldn't possibly be yours the second you said his age. But I said nothing, Connor. Because I wanted to see how far your cruelty would take you."

Connor slumped against the porch doorframe, looking as though he had been struck by lightning. "Kirsten... I was so stupid. I was so insecure. I thought if I admitted I was the problem, you’d leave me. So I turned it on you... and then when Melinda gave me attention, I jumped at it because I wanted to prove to the world I was a man..."

"You didn't prove you were a man, Connor," I said gently. "You proved you were a coward."

"I ruined my life!" Connor wailed, dropping to his knees on my front porch steps, weeping openly in front of the quiet street. "Julian took the baby! Melinda is facing criminal charges for falsifying paternity documents for financial gain! I lost my savings, my house, my reputation... everyone is laughing at me, Kirsten! Everyone!"

He raised his wet, pleading face to me. "Please, Kirsten... give me another chance. We can start over. We don't need kids. We can just be together like we used to be. I still love you!"

I looked down at the man kneeling at my doorstep.

Eighteen months ago, this sight would have broken my heart. I would have reached down, pulled him up, kissed his forehead, and offered to fix everything for him.

But the woman who stood behind this door today was no longer the broken wife who begged for affection in a cold house.

"I don't love you, Connor," I said, my voice echoing with absolute, unshakeable finality. "And I haven't loved you since the day I walked out of our divorce attorney's office."
