Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

The sharp sound of the bottle hitting the floor rattled the silent hallway.

Connor frowned, looking down at the spilled milk, then up at Melinda. "What's wrong with you? Pick that up."

Melinda didn't move. She couldn't. Her face was as white as my lab coat, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror as she stared at the man approaching us.

"Melinda?" the man in the suit called out, his deep voice carrying easily down the corridor. "I got your text saying you were on the fourth floor. Is everything okay with Leo's check-up?"

The man walked right up to the stroller, completely ignoring Connor for a second. He crouched down, his face level with the little boy. The resemblance was immediate, breathtaking, and undeniable. They had the exact same hazel eye shape, the same wavy reddish-blond hair, and the exact same narrow chin structure.

"Hey there, big guy," the man smiled, tapping the baby’s nose with the plush bear's paw. Little Leo squealed with delight, reaching his arms out to be picked up.

Connor stood frozen, his eyes darting between the newcomer, the baby, and Melinda. "Who the hell are you?"

The man stood up, adjusting his tie, and offered a polite, professional hand to Connor. "I'm Julian Vance. I'm Melinda's partner."

The hallway seemed to lose all oxygen.

Connor looked at Julian’s hand, then at his face, then down at the baby in the stroller, and finally at Melinda, whose eyes were filled with tears of pure panic.

"Partner?" Connor spat out, refusing to shake the hand. "What do you mean, partner? I'm her husband! And this is my son!"

Julian’s smile instantly disappeared. His eyes narrowed with deep confusion and growing irritation. He turned his attention entirely to Melinda.

"Melinda... what is he talking about?" Julian asked, his tone dropping an octave. "Who is this guy?"

"Julian, please," Melinda sobbed, grabbing his sleeve. "Not here. Let's go outside. I can explain—"

"Explain what?!" Connor shouted, his face turning a dark, dangerous red. The composure he had displayed minutes ago vanished entirely, replaced by the wild, desperate rage of a man realizing the floor beneath him was collapsing. "I paid for the nursery! I paid for the birth at the private clinic! My name is on the damn birth certificate!"

Julian’s posture shifted instantly. The polished businessman vanished, replaced by an enraged father. He stepped directly into Connor’s personal space, towering over him.

"Your name?" Julian growled. "I've been paying child support and funding Leo's college trust fund since the day he was born! Melinda told me you were just her broke ex-roommate who was helping her manage her apartment lease while I was setting up the Chicago branch!"

A audible gasp echoed from the nurses' station behind me.

I stood there, my tablet still tucked under my arm, watching the chaotic spectacle unfold.

Seven years of being blamed. Seven years of being told I wasn't enough, that I was defective, that I was the reason a home couldn't be built. And in less than five minutes, the entire illusion Connor had constructed to crush my spirit had shattered into a million humiliating pieces.

"Melinda..." Connor whispered, his voice cracking, turning to face her with wide, wild eyes. "Tell him. Tell him I'm his father. You told me... you told me he was mine."

Melinda covered her face with both hands, breaking down into hysterical sobs. She couldn't say a word. Her silence was a guillotine.
