Chapter 5 - The Grand Hallway Beggars

The final act of the Cole family downfall didn't take place in a quiet courtroom; it happened in the grand lobby of Vale Meridian Headquarters in downtown Chicago, twenty-four hours later.

Daniel, Margaret, and Vanessa had spent the night in a cheap airport motel after the locks on the lakefront estate were biometrically changed. Desperate, broke, and facing total social ruin, they had no choice but to come to my turf.

When they entered the towering glass-and-marble lobby, they didn't see a helpless wife. They saw hundreds of employees moving with precision, security checkpoints, and a massive digital portrait of me on the wall as the founding CEO.

"We need to see Vivienne!" Margaret shouted at the reception desk, her expensive clothes wrinkled from sleeping in a motel. "Tell her it’s her mother-in-law!"

"Director Vale is currently in a high-level board meeting," the receptionist said, her voice perfectly clinical. "But she did leave a message for you if you arrived."

The receptionist pushed a rolling cart out from behind the desk. On it were three plastic buckets, three industrial mops, and a bottle of cheap bleach.

"What is this?!" Vanessa gasped, her voice shrill with humiliation as the hovering business executives in the lobby stopped to look at them.

"Director Vale said that if you want the assault charges dropped and the secondary family trust unfrozen so you can afford food, you need to clean the main lobby floor," the receptionist smiled coldly. "Starting right now."

Daniel looked at the mops, then up at the glass elevators where I was currently standing on the balcony floor, looking down at them like a deity watching ants. Beside me stood two federal marshals waiting for my final word on Daniel's arrest warrant.

Daniel knew his career was dead. His family's name was radioactive. If he went to prison, he would lose the last shred of his life.

With a broken, hollow sob, Daniel fell to his knees right there on the polished marble lobby floor. He reached out, grabbed the handle of the mop, and looked up at me with absolute, unadulterated desperation.

"I'm sorry, Vivienne!" Daniel screamed, his voice echoing off the high marble walls as he began to scrub the floor. "Please! Forgive us! I’m sorry!"

Seconds later, Margaret, the proud matriarch of the "old-fashioned" Cole family, dropped to her knees beside her son, her hands trembling as she dipped a rag into the bleach water. Vanessa followed, weeping openly as the very socialites she used to brag to walked past her, adjusting their suits in disgust.

The entire Cole family was on their knees, begging for my mercy in front of the world.
